THE NIGHTS ARE DRAWING IN, THE
leaves have started falling and summer already
seems a distant memory – but there’s no need
to accept winter’s imminent arrival just yet.
Instead, head for Milaidhoo Island, located
in the heart of an idyllic UNESCO Biosphere
Reserve. Encouraging guests to ditch their
iPhones, this Maldivian-owned (and run)
island prides itself on offering an authentic
experience that embodies the spirit and
heritage of the Maldives – as well as the
impossible glamour that this destination has
come to represent. An air of barefoot
informality pervades the island, befitting its
simple, subtly luxurious atmosphere.
Hidden among the tropical greenery and set
on stilts over the sea are 30 opulent over-water
villas, as well as 20 further villas on the beach.
Each has been designed by a local Maldivian

architect, created with responsibly sourced
materials to seamlessly fuse indoor and outdoor
living while ensuring minimum impact on the
precious coral reef surrounding the resort.
Every one features a large private pool, plus an
island host to attend to guests’ every whim.
Milaidhoo Island’s enviable location in the
famously beautiful Baa Atoll makes this the
perfect spot for those wanting to make the
most of the Maldives’ azure oceans. Guests can
join a local fisherman for the catch of the day
and learn how to craft a traditional dhoni (the
classic Maldivian sailing boat) and also try
snorkelling, windsurfing, or taking to the seas
on kayaks, catamarans and paddle boards.
Culinary experiences are also a highlight at
Milaidhoo. Ba’theli by the Reef, one of the
resort’s three world-class restaurants, is the only
fine dining restaurant in the Maldives to serve
Maldivian cuisine. Expert local chefs enchant
with traditional, island-influenced flavours and
textures while more casual dining can be found
at the sand-floored beachfront Shoreline Grill
and casual all-day Ocean restaurants.
For a more personalised approach, the island
is also home to an innovative ‘mood dining’
concept, which invites guests to choose from

five different dining ‘moods’ (including a dawn
‘Sunrise Awakening’ and ‘Deep Sleep’ before
bed) consisting of specially curated menus
served at specific locations across the island.
Families are welcome, although no children
under nine are allowed on the island, making
it the perfect spot for couples too – whether it’s
a proposal, a honeymoon or simply a special
escape à deux. For peak romance, there’s even
the opportunity to spend a night under the
stars like castaways on a private sandbank. A
four-poster bed draped in muslin and the glow
of lanterns creates an unforgettable atmosphere.
