‘THIS WOULD BE A FINE
place for a race,’ Queen Anne declared
on first seeing the land that, 308
years later, still holds a particular
fascination for the royals. This year,
there was splendour as the rain fell
and records were rewritten – Ascot is,
after all, still the finest place for a race.
It was a safe bet the Queen would
be the fashion frontrunner – but no
one could have predicted how strong
Her Majesty’s style influence would
be on day one. From Zara Philips’
indigo floral to Princess Beatrice’s
broderie lace, royals mingled beneath
a canopy of umbrellas in a spectrum
of blue – as per their matriarch her-
self, in pastel Angela Kelly. ]
Royal Ascot saw megawatt
glamour, record-breaking
form and umbrellas aplenty
