[day three’s Ribblesdale Stakes were
the stuff of Ascot lore (though some,
post-V&A Summer Party, were feel-
ing a little the worse for wear to begin
with). Bets were off for Star Catcher’s
jockey, Frankie Dettori – who land-
ed his fourth win in a row, scooping
the Gold Cup. ‘I’m probably not the
most popular winner of the day,’ he
grinned, as bookies drew their breath
at the savage hit to their takings.
For some, though, the meeting’s
best drama was saved for the fourth
day, as Hayley Turner became Ascot’s
first female winner in 32 years, on
Thanks Be in the Sandringham
Stakes. The victory was watched by
the Queen, in winning magenta. (
