lost on womenswear either. I adored
a pair of mannish front-pleated
cream trousers worn with braces and a
pale blue silk shirt. It managed to be
androgynous yet utterly feminine,
a cool alternative to the typical sum-
mer dress. I could see myself in it,
ideally stepping off a boat en route to
aperitivi somewhere sunny and fabu-
lous. A pair of silver shantung trousers
were divinely paired with a Chinese
collared shirt. Full Armani MO:
commanding without screaming for
attention. Armani’s mastery of tactile
fabrics, like velvets, silk and linen,
created an impression of luxury
without pretension. And I adored
the sculptural berets that topped off
most women’s looks.
The crowd was chic, as expected.
I spotted Uma Thurman wearing a
glamorous black gown and many

Japanese clients in the latest Armani
couture. And man, did they wear it
well. It was a match made in heaven.
Of course, the house’s genius is that
it doesn’t bend to trends. Mr Armani
designs for his own world alone. He
has his army of Armani women,
whose wardrobes brim with invest-
ment pieces that are as classic and
wearable five, ten years on, as they
are freshly pressed off the runway.
With each season, he simply dresses
these women for a new event. His
style is above the latest craze: instead,
it’s about good taste and an effortless
cool that doesn’t age. Perfection.
The overall sense of elegance
conjured in the show was best cap-
tured in one revealing detail: many
of the models wore flats. It was about
being at ease – the ultimate Armani
luxury, through and through. I can
step behind that. (
