Project Art Deco Sampler

DESIGNED BY JENNY VAN DE WIELE

Fans of Art Deco will go wild for this stylish design,

which gives a period spin to a traditional sampler

golden age

W

hile its initial period may
only have lasted 15 years,
Art Deco continues to have
an enduring effect on design and
is still enjoyed by many today. This
style from the 1920s and 1930s was
characterised by sleek lines, decorative
panels and geometric motifs, such as
chevrons, all of which can be seen
in Jenny’s clever Art Deco-inspired
sampler – it’ll jazz up any space!
Stitched in just seven thread
shades on 14-count pewter-coloured
aida, the usual house on a sampler
has been replaced with a typical Art
Deco dwelling, complete with multi-
paned windows and symmetrical wall
decorations. The colour palette calls
to mind the period houses in Miami

Beach, while the font used for the
alphabet and numbers wouldn’t look
out of place in The Great Gatsby.
A crisp white wooden frame is the
perfect complement to this chic piece,
which has a timeless style that will be
appreciated by lovers of Art Deco and
collectors of samplers, alike.

Art Deco has always been one of my
favourite design movements and I’ve seen
some gorgeous examples, such as the
Chrysler Building in New York. I hope you
like my cross stitch take on it!
