Curl power

The new wave in hairstyles is on a roll

A mikveh caters to a specific function in the
Jewish faith. Dipping in a mikveh bath provides
spiritual cleansing via full body immersion in
water, and a tevilah (the act of bathing in a mikveh)
is an important religious ritual for women, post-
menstruation and childbirth. Now, the Jewish female
community of Mexico City has a new structure to
support their bathing practices, courtesy of Cherem
Arquitectos. Aiming to create a design that would
respect the project’s religious aspect, architect
Abraham Cherem worked with the principle of
simplicity, emphasising ‘the management of natural
light and the selection of sober materials, which
grant dignity and an approach to the earthly plane,
while the building’s own use seeks an approach to
God’. The result is an elegant, monolithic structure
made in concrete, marble blocks and wood,
containing baths and a multifunctional event space.
Submersion pools are carved low, into the earth,
interspersed with patios and contemplative gardens,
and feature running water (in this case, rainwater
collected in tanks), as required by the age-old ritual.

IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE

Characterful environments are back in fashion – chairs
are fat and fun, pattern is our friend again, and curls are
back in the frame, for all genders. ‘There’s something
quite soulless about poker-straight hair,’ says Luke
Hersheson, creative director of Hersheson’s in London.
‘Curls are soulful. They have more character.’ Perms are
returning to the salon floor, but the thin, tight rods used
for perms in the 1980s are out. Instead, large foam
rollers set at angles are used to produce a softer curl
that is more likely to drop out eventually than grow
out with a demarcation line. ‘It’s about putting curl into
simpler, longer haircuts, not graphic shapes – more
Julia Roberts or Andie MacDowell,’ says Hersheson.
For those who have natural curl to work with, it’s
a question of remembering how to style them. Curl up
with Dyson’s redesigned Supersonic diffuser (part of
the Supersonic set, £300, dyson.co.uk) and Hersheson’s
new Almost Everything Cream (£10, hershesons.com).
