NATALIA AND SAMUEL RACHLIN
Writers
Father and daughter teamed up to chart
the quirky life and characterful carvings of
Danish designer Hans Bølling (page 266).
‘It’s always a pleasure to be able to share
the stories of these midcentury mavericks,’
says Houston-based design writer Natalia.
‘Hans is a jolly character, who sees the world
in a delightfully positive way. We could all
learn from that,’ says Samuel, a Russian-born
Danish journalist. He is based between
Copenhagen and Washington DC and
currently writing a book on populism.

STEFANIE MOSHAMMER
Photographer
We sent Moshammer and her lens to survey
Ljubljana (page 340), a place evolving from
overlooked thoroughfare to creative hub
in its own right. ‘I really enjoyed the vestiges
of the Socialist past and its “Yugonostalgia”,’
says Moshammer, who is mostly based
in Vienna, but will soon embark on an
expedition across the US, documenting
the ‘in between’. She is also working on
a project for the Burgtheater, the Austrian
national theatre in Vienna.

WILLIAM KENTRIDGE
Artist
Kentridge stands alongside El Anatsui
(page 188) as one of the great African artists
of our time, equally adept at apocalyptic
visions (like his recent production of
Alban Berg’s opera Wo zz e c k) and jubilant
celebrations of human resilience (the eight-
screen installation More Sweetly Play the
Dance, a comment on the refugee crisis).
His sole Véronique, a classic French dish
with an indulgent vermouth sauce, features
in this month’s Artist’s Palate (page 402).

ARI MARCOPOULOS
Photographer
The Dutch-born Marcopoulos, who splits
his time between Brooklyn and Karystos,
is known for his raw, intimate portraits of
the world’s most familiar faces. He went
inside the New York studio of artist Jenny
Holzer, where the creative magic for her
guest editor section was unfolding in real
time (page 319). ‘It was cool because I got
to see the process of the making of the
pieces,’ he says. A compilation of Polaroids
he created in the mid-1990s is currently in
the works, published by Dashwood Books.

MARK HOOPER
Writer
Editorial consultant and writer Hooper
dropped into the Berkshire headquarters
of Benchmark Furniture to report on the
Legacy project for London Design Festival
(page 133). ‘There’s an incredibly warm,
“can do” spirit about the team there,’ he
says. ‘Different designers were all working
together, helping to brainstorm and problem
solve each other’s projects, with no sense
of ego or rivalry.’ Hooper’s ever-varied in-tray
is currently seeing him explore everything
from aboriginal art to coal mining.

KUBA RYNIEWICZ
Photographer
Ryniewicz’s work goes deeper than standard
portraiture and travel photography, a quality
clear in his reportage on the burgeoning
creative community in Northern Nicosia
(page 291), the native city of our guest
editor Hussein Chalayan. ‘Hussein is very
particular with what he wants, but at the
same time he trusted me and gave a clear
horizon for my own visual interpretation.’
Ryniewicz is currently producing a book
with his friend, fashion stylist Julian Ganio.
