F*****g Rockwell!

Lana Del Rey

It’s always been tricky to define Lana Del
Rey’s musical style with certainty, and the
New York-born singer-songwriter continues
to defy easy categorization with her sixth
studio album, which weaves psych-rock
jams, piano-based ballads, folk-rock tunes
and tinges of trip-hop. However, befitting
its title, Norman F*****g Rockwell! also has a
definite air of irreverence.

FIVE FACTS:

  1. Del Rey first mentioned the track
“Bartender” in a Pitchfork interview back in
January 2018, when she called it a “weird
track... that doesn’t belong to a record yet”.

  2. She announced the album’s title on
Zane Lowe’s show World Record, airing on
the Apple-owned radio station Beats 1, in
    September 2018.

  3. The tracks that Del Rey previewed on social
media as the album’s release approached
    included “Happiness Is a Butterfly”,
“Cinnamon Girl” and “How to Disappear”.

  4. The cover art shows Del Rey posing on
a sailboat with Duke Nicholson, actor Jack
    Nicholson’s grandson.

  5. The album has won widespread critical
acclaim, with Rolling Stone’s Rob Sheffield
calling it “even more massive and majestic
than everyone hoped it would be”.
