TRUTH-TELLERS AND LIARS

Clarice Foster has applied for a job with the FBI, and Melinda Jenkins is

responsible for doing her background check. Melinda has discovered that

Clarice belongs to a secret society—the Liars and Truth-Tellers League—each

member of which is either a person who always tells the truth or a person

who always lies. According to FBI policy, Clarice’s membership in itself isn’t

a problem as long as Clarice is one of the truth-tellers: The Bureau is naturally

hesitant to hire people incapable of telling the truth...although the idea is

intriguing! In an effort to determine which type of member Clarice is, Melinda

interviewed Donny DeLuca, the local League chapter president, who made

the five cryptic statements below about five chapter members (including

Clarice and himself). See if you can determine which of these members are

liars and which are truth-tellers, and, in particular, see if Clarice passes this

part of her background check.

1. Elvira is a liar.


2. If you were to ask Alfonse if Clarice were a liar, he would say no.


3. If you were to ask Elvira what Biff would say if he were asked
   if I were a liar, she would say he would say yes.
