CHAPTER 3 • The Loop 51

Not all themes support sticky posts visually, and the functionality is a bit hidden in the admin
interface, so keep that in mind when building around the sticky post feature.

WORKING WITH POST FORMATS

Post formats were introduced in WordPress 3.1 and join sticky posts as a separate way to add
a bit of control over the content. There are nine different post formats:

◾ aside: For short updates, usually without a title
◾ audio: For use with audio files
◾ chat: Used to publish chat transcripts
◾ gallery: For gallery posts
◾ image: For displaying a single image
◾ link: To link the reader onwards
◾ quote: Used to show quotes
◾ status: For short status updates
◾ video: For displaying a single video

Obviously, you can use these for anything you want, depending on what your theme is doing
with them using CSS and conditional tags.

You pick the post format in a box in the right column. Figure 3-4 shows the box for the
Twenty Thirteen theme, which supports all nine post formats, not counting the standard
(default) one.
