Hitting the Road

Beginning with a co-location with the
Creative Craft Show at ExCeL, London
from 4th-6th April 2019, they took
all the elements from the flagship
format – workshops, features,
the competition, demonstrations,
shopping and a whole load of Cake
Stars – and scaled everything down to
curate an event that could be visited
in one day and still offered a taste of
everything people loved about the
Cake International experience.

The show was overwhelmed with
support, selling out on Saturday,
and the competition was a huge
success with 600 entries. Winning
the Best in Show prize and goodies
from The Cake Decorating Company
worth over £500 was Jane Lashbrook
whose incredible, surreal, detailed
depiction of a young girl magically
transforming a cat into a fish was the
unanimous stand out to the judges.
Flawless perfection aside, the piece
had realistic movement, lifelike
expression in the girl's face and the
cat and the design all came from
Jane's imagination.

Alongside the competition display
area, visitors enjoyed walk through
installations celebrating the 50th
anniversary of the moon landings, live
sculpts including a life-sized bride
and groom and live competitions.
The On Tour show managed to pack
creativity, skill and a huge amount of
fun into its three days.

Amongst the thousands of fans and
cake artists enjoying themselves,
Event Manager, Melanie Underwood,
summed up her favourite moments

from the show: “Seeing the hundreds
of people arriving early in the
morning with their pieces is so
exciting, I never tire of the buzz. I love
to hear the delighted competitors'
reactions to their results the following
day, I must admit I do stay close to the
competition area at that time! I loved
the ‘Cake Side Of The Moon’ feature,
the world's first interactive edible
feature managed and devised by
Steph Parker and team.

Watching the Live Championships
was inspiring stuff! These artists are
all so very talented. I love to stand
back and look at the competition
entry tables very early in the morning
(around 6am!) before the competitors
arrive and think how amazing it is
and how lucky we all are to have such
a wonderful event in the UK.”

Melanie and the Cake International
crew are excited for a return to
London in 2020 – with more details
coming soon! After that, the sky is the
limit and the team can't wait to see
where the next On Tour destination
could be!

For those who can't wait until
next year, Cake International's
flagship event takes place from
1st-3rd November 2019 at the NEC
Birmingham. Early Bird tickets are on
sale now and budding Best in Show
winners can take advantage of Early
Bird entry at reduced price until 30th
August 2019.

Melanie is already counting down the
days until the Birmingham show! “I
love the fun and exhilaration of the

Cake Off and the Live Championships,
looking forward to the live battles!
Meeting people you haven't seen for a
year and the teamwork that develops
with being close to people over the
weekend.

Watching the fabulous features
blossom into edible works of wonder.
Experiencing the sheer joy of prize
giving with the placements and of
course, awarding the Best in Show!”

Cake International is always the
place to discover new trends and
techniques – and Melanie is hard at
work finalising this year’s teaching
programme. She says, “I am interested
to see the 'fault line' cakes and we
will certainly have a demonstration
showcasing this new technique. We
are also looking at the new trends
with buttercream – the artists using
this medium are incredible – and we
see royal icing taken to a new level by
Indian artist, Prachi Dhabal Deb, who
will be demonstrating her amazing
skills in November."

Cake International on Tour returns
to ExCeL London, UK from 24th-25th
April 2020.

Cake International, NEC Birmingham,
UK from 1st-3rd November 2019.

The Birmingham competition closes
27th September 2019 (Early Bird
entry closes 30th August 2019).

In response to cake fans who pleaded for Cake International to take a trip closer to their
cities, the huge event decided to trial a bite-sized version taking place in new locations.
