Many of the shapes in this
painting are repeated to
create rhythm and pattern.
The circles, leaves, reeds,
and obviously the thistle are
organic shapes. These are
in contrast to the geometric
shapes of the rectangles.
Originally the entire canvas
was painted white. The areas
of white still showing become
negative shapes, whereas the
deliberately drawn shapes
are positive. Most of the
shapes are either vertically
or horizontally oriented, mak-
ing a loose grid, which gives
the painting structure.
