LINES

Lines can be curved or straight and can be used to divide
space. Contour lines help to define shapes.

Lines can bring energy or stability to a design. Stability is
more likely to be achieved through the use of horizontal
or vertical lines, The bolder they are, the stronger they'll
be. The diagonal lines used here are dynamic. Broken lines
may be "filled in" by the viewer, creating pathways.

Lines may be gestural (spontaneous and loose) or deliber-
ate (planned and structured). Here the lines of the roofs
and the telephone poles are planned, whereas the lines in
the scribbled area are entirely spontaneous and disrupt
some of the order to add energy to an otherwise static
painting.
