arlier this year, Bazaar At Work hosted a lunch at
Claridge’s to which we invited senior women from
the worlds of banking, business and the civil ser-
vice, alongside a clutch of successful entrepreneurs.
The ensuing conversation centred around money; specifically,
why many women, however numerate, find it uncomfortable
to talk about.
Kitty Bhaman, an executive director at UBS, presented new
research carried out among high-net-worth women, which
showed that 62 per cent of its British respondents opted out of
participating in long-term financial decisions, believing that
their spouses were better-informed. (Sadly, with the wisdom of
hindsight, 76 per cent of the widows and divorcees surveyed
wished they had been more involved.)
