‘Blue jeans are the most beautiful
things since the gondola,’ proclaimed
Diana Vreeland, the former fashion
editor of Bazaar. I am equally
enamoured of stripy tops and the
Dior Bar jacket; each as timeless
as the perfect pair of jeans, and
altogether, an outfit to make
the heart sing.’

t he dust...’ That sense of tra nsience is inherent to t he
poignancy of fleeting allure; yet as one grows older,
so, too, does beauty become apparent in trust and
friendship; or as Juliet Nicolson writes, ‘in the eyes of
the person who listens to you and in discovering you
a re able to listen in ret ur n’.
It therefore seems somehow appropriate that our
cover star this month is Kristen Stewart, who
remembers how she used to be characterised as an
‘awkward’ teenager; and has now grown into a
woman who prefers not to be defined by labels
(either in terms of her sexuality or in her career).
‘Evolution is weird – we’re all becoming incredibly
ambiguous,’ she says in her interview with Sophie
Elmhirst, ‘and it’s this really gorgeous thing.’
But t he la st word must go to Toni Mor r ison
(though her passion was always for sustaining a
na r rative, rat her t ha n coming to a n end). ‘I a m
a storyteller and therefore an optimist,’ she said,
addressing her class of graduating students at
Princeton University. ‘I’m a believer in the power of
knowledge and the ferocity of beauty, so from my
point of view, your life is already artful – waiting, just
waiting, for you to make it art.’
