ALI
SMITH
Described by Sebastian
Barry as ‘Scotland’s Nobel
Laureate-in-waiting’, the author
and academic was brought up
in Inverness and began writing
plays while studying for a PhD
at Cambridge (where she still
lives and works today).
Smith’s novels include the
prize-winning How to be Both
and, most recently, Spring, the
third volume in her seasonal
quartet about Brexit Britain.
A regular contributor to
Bazaar, she reflects on the
nat ure of beaut y in t his issue’s
portfolio of literature and art.

‘Yoko Ono.’

in the world ‘The rooftop
of the Casa Delfino in Chania,
Crete, when the swifts who live
in the opposite roof are teaching
their new babies to fly.’

‘Every day I get older, life gets
easier,’ says our cover star. In
a ballroom in the Shangri-La
Hotel in Paris, the actress
meets Sophie Elmhirst to
discuss leaving her teenage
Twilight years behind, the
ambiguity of sexuality, and her
new film Charlie’s Angels, which
w i ll be relea sed in November.
An icon who inspires you
‘Patti Smith has always made
everything OK for me. I can
almost hear her telling me to
keep reaching when I need it.’

lea r n, so much to si f t t hrough.
I wa nt to k now t hem.’

Growing up in Long Beach,
California, Athena Wilson
began modelling because she
wa nted to ea r n enough money
for a bicycle. Since then, she has
appeared on catwalks for Dior
and Armani among others, and
starred in a campaign for Louis
Vuitton. In our fashion story,
she is photographed against
the glorious backdrop of Corrie
Fee in the Scottish Cairngorms.
Your boldest beauty moment
‘It was when Paul Rowland gave
me a Joan of Arc bowlcut and
bleached my eyebrows. I barely
recognised myself, but I loved it.’
An icon who inspires you
‘Guinevere van Seenus and
Kristen McMenamy are two
of my favourite models. They’re
both chameleons, yet instantly
recognisable in any photo.’
An era you’d love to live in
‘The Eighties, so I could go
dancing with my mum.’
