Left (top) This is a four-shot, in-camera
multiple exposure made using ‘dark
blend’ mode. The subject is reed beds
in Loch na Moracha, Isle of Harris.
At fi rst I tried multiple ‘straight’ shots,
but these didn’t really work, as the
light was fl at and the sky was leaden
grey. However, changing the blend
mode brought out more colour and
texture, and after a bit of trial and
error rotating the camera I got the
eff ect I was aiming for.

Left (middle) Taken at Bishop Wood
near Sherburn in Elmet, North
Yorkshire. This small pond has
gradually succumbed to a thick green
covering of algae, and over time various
bits of wood have appeared through it.

Left (bottom) These refl ections of
grasses at RSPB Langford Lowfi elds
in Nottinghamshire remind me of
Japanese writing. They stand out
particularly well on days when there
is little wind, but here I reduced the
blue tones of the water and increased
the contrast in post-production to
enhance the graphic eff ect.

Opposite (top) When I noticed these
rocks and refl ections on Lough Ree
in Ireland, I took the shot without any
hesitation, combining a three-stop ND
grad fi lter with a 10-stop ND fi lter.

Opposite (bottom) The photo was
taken in Elswout Estate in Overveen,
Netherlands, close to my home. It is
a beautiful place and I go there on a
regular basis. Because it is so familiar
to me I have to work hard to make
fresh images, but this is one of them.
