Mark Helliwell
Left (top) This image was taken in
autumn from the side of Burbage
Brook, as it meandered its way through
Padley Gorge in Derbyshire. I was
initially searching for compositions
of fallen leaves on rocks, with the water
rushing by, but most of the viewpoints
were too cluttered. I spotted this
simple composition by changing from
a wideangle to telephoto focal length;
I liked the diagonals created by the
water at the base of the main rock,
complemented by the triangular
rock at the bottom of the image.

Left (below) I had been out enjoying
some early morning mist across the
river Dart, near Totnes in Devon,
and while I was returning through
some boggy woodland close to the
river’s edge this scene caught my eye.
The colours and spacing of the leaves
on the surface of the perfectly still
water created interesting patterns,
complemented by the very even
latticework of the refl ected trees.
Focusing on the refl ected trees and
using an aperture that threw the leaves
out of focus created an abstract that
I found pleasing. In post-production
the image was rotated 180° so the
refl ected trees appeared upright;
the only other adjustment was to
strengthen the blacks and whites
to add a bit more contrast.

Opposite The Maligne River tumbles
out of the Rocky Mountains in
Canada’s Jasper National Park into
the Athabasca River. Maligne Canyon
was created where Maligne River
cuts through a limestone formation,
creating a canyon that is more than
50m deep in places, and just 2m wide.
There were many forest fi res in the
Rockies in the summer of 2017, and
these obscured views of the mighty
peaks and glaciers. Instead, I pointed
my lens down to the lush microclimate
of the canyon and the rushing waters.
