in winter. Here’s our pick of the latest
courses to help improve your outdoor
and navigation skills.

Winter navigation courses
Various dates in January
SYHA Aviemore, Scotland
A weekend or series of one-day courses
targeting those who enjoy the Scott ish hills
but would like to improve their knowledge
and navigation skills during the colder
seasons. In groups no larger than six people
you’ll learn about winter safety, avalanche
avoidance and how to use crampons and
an ice axe eff ect ively.

Hill and Mountain Skills
3 to 4 February
Capel Curig, Conwy
For hillwalkers who lack the confi dence to
st ray off designated footpaths, this two-day
introduct ory course focuses on improving
navigation and route planning skills. From
coast al walks to more complex hill and
mountain hikes, this session gives you top
tips for tackling the basics of fi nding your way
over various terrain. Participants will then put
what they’ve learned into act ion in a pract ical
session around Capel Curig.

Bronze NNAS Training
and Assessment
17 to 18 February
Holmbury St Mary, Surrey
A two-day course with groups no larger than
eight people, this is a great way to improve
your compass and map-reading skills prior to
making excursions to more remote locations.
The course leader Richard Bett s will cover all
elements of the Bronze National Navigation
Award Scheme and provide participants with
the opportunity to undertake the assessment
to secure your Bronze award.

Hill Skills
31 March to 1 April
Plas y Brenin National Mountain Centre,
Gwynedd
This two-day accredited mountain training
course covers planning, navigation, GPS,
common hazards, correct clothing, weather
and how to deal with emergencies. Based at
Plas y Brenin National Mountain Centre in the
heart of Snowdonia, the skills you develop will
be transferable to other popular outdoor areas
across the UK and beyond.

BANFF MOUNTAIN FILM FESTIVAL TOUR
Banff Mountain Film Fest ival has embarked on its 2017 tour, bringing some of the most
exhilarating new adventure fi lms to various venues across the UK and Ireland. With two
programmes on off er, the tour includes emerging explorers on mind-blowing journeys to
the most remote and beautiful parts of the world. Get ready to be entertained with incredible
footage of adrenaline-packed act ion sp orts, sp ect acular cinematography and moving
st orytelling. A highlight for this year includes Into Twin Galaxies: A Greenland Epic, where
Ben Stookesberry, Sarah McNair-Landry and Erik Boomer ski and kayak 1,000km over the
