Plover Scar lighthouse, Lancashire


S


itting just off the coast at
Cockersand, Lancashire, this 19th
century brick-and-wood lighthouse
is built on a rock shelf at the mouth of the
river Lune. Plover Scar is accessible on
foot at low tide and the rocks provide
wonderful foreground interest to an
already photogenic building.

How to get there From Lancast er, take
the A588 south for approximately fi ve

miles. Turn right on to Moss Lane at
Upper Thurnham, signed Cockerham
Sands caravan park. At the end of
Moss Lane turn left on to Slack Lane
and follow the road to the coast , where
free parking is available in front of
Bank House farm. Walk north along
the coast al path for around half a mile
until you see the lighthouse.
What to shoot The lighthouse looks
best when the tide is out; as the water

Neumann’s Flashes, Cheshire


N


eumann’s Flashes is a former
waste lime lagoon (now reclaimed)
on the outskirts of Northwich.
The delightful lake is known locally for
its myriad birdlife, and over the last few
years wildlife hides and viewpoints have
been constructed at diff erent locations
around the water.

How to get there From the A533 in
the centre of Northwich, follow signs
for Manchest er A559, heading east on
Chest er Way. Aft er half a mile take the
second exit at the large roundabout,
signed Wincham and Marst on, and park
in the lay-by approximately half a mile
further on the left -hand side. The short
walk to Neumann’s Flashes st arts here.

What to shoot Tall grasses backed by
trees in a lakeside environment. Free
hides available for wildlife photography.
Best time of day The lake is surrounded
by trees and a circular path, so it is a
good location any time of day. Sunrise
and sunset provide the best light; frost
and snow add to the atmosp here.

when the trees surrounding the lake turn
gold and the grasses grow tall.

pick out the lighthouse from the shore.
