Penarth Pier, Vale of Glamorgan


P


enarth Pier was originally built
in the Victorian era, but has been
altered on numerous occasions
since, including the construction of
a spectacular Art Deco style pavilion
at its landward end in 1930. This makes
a great focal point, especially on winter
mornings when the sun comes up in the
ideal position to capture sunrise.

How to get there From junct ion 33 of
the M4, take the A4232 towards Cardiff
for eight miles. Exit on to the A4055,
then turn left on to the A4160 at the
second junct ion, signed Penarth.
Follow this for one mile to a roundabout
and take the second exit; you will reach
the pier aft er half a mile.

What to shoot The pier and the beach;
period details.
Best time of day A great sunrise
location during the winter months.

Pass through the village of Holywell and
park in the National Trust pay and disp lay
car park at the bott om of the hill. From
here the beach can be reached by
crossing the road and following
a footpath for a quarter of a mile.
What to shoot Carter’s Rocks (Gull
Rocks), and the sand dunes and cliff s
that surround the beach.
Best time of day Sunset or morning
for sunlight-illuminated images.

he sea stacks at Holywell Bay are
one of the most spectacular sites
on the Cornish coast. They can be
photographed from numerous vantage
points, including Holywell beach, where
the receding tide regularly reveals sand
patterns interspersed with pools and
channels of water. These provide great
foreground interest for landscape
images, especially at sunset.

How to get there Take the A392 out
of Newquay until it meets the A3075 at
a mini roundabout. Take the second exit
