This was the winning image for the Hasselblad
Masters Award in 2016. The stubborn last leaves
of a beech form a perfect contrast with the fog in
the background. Like with many of my images, if you
just happened to pass by, you probably wouldn’t have
noticed it. The path was situated at a lower point,
which resulted in an interesting angle. Using an
aperture of f/2.8 made a beautiful shallow depth
of fi eld. I emphasised the blurry background in
post-production and made some colour changes.

I do a lot of work with waves and live in an area in
France that is very well known for them – it’s a world-
renowned surfi ng break. I shot this particular image
in the morning with a 600mm lens, in an area that
probably has the best waves. This one was around 70m
out, and the plume on top of the wave shows it was
created by a light, off shore wind. Those always create
the best waves; the wind just holds the wave up. The
light was stunning. There were no clouds, but there was
a slight sea mist diff using the light, and it caused this
lovely, silvery light on the water that I always love. This
was one of about 20 shots, and I just happened to get
the wave in the right place, with a nice balance of light.
