1 Langley Castle Hotel
Northumberland

Natives of north-east England will wax
lyrical about Allen Banks [right] and
Staward Gorge, but it remains something
of a well-kept local secret. The 617-acre
estate has the largest ancient woodland in
the county, and red squirrels and various
rare birds are commonplace throughout.
Susan Davidson, granddaughter of the
9th Earl of Strathmore, did much to develop
the formal gardens on the estate during the
Victorian era too, resulting in fascinating
pathways that survive today.

2 Brownber Hall
Cumbria

Falling in a sweet spot equidistant from
the Yorkshire Dales, the North Pennines
and the Lake District National Park, the
wonderfully-named village of Newbiggin-
on-Lune is surrounded by natural beauty
and home to the splendid Brownber Hall.
And while you can travel to admire autumn
colour, canny visitors will enjoy the walker’s
paradise of Howgill Fells even closer by.
Brownber Hall itself is a rustic country
house built in 1860, the eight bedrooms
brought up to date with contemporary art
prints and modern fabrics. New for the
season are bread and pizza-making
sessions, perfect for carb-loading for
warmth in time for winter.
