Tickle

“Tickling” the ears may
boost wellbeing and
prevent chronic disease as
we age, according to a new
study in the journal Aging.
Researchers clipped custom-
made electrodes to the ears
of 29 people over 55 and sent
painless electric tingles through
the skin. The aim was to
stimulate the vagus nerve
to rebalance the autonomic
nervous system, which controls
bodily functions such as
breathing and heartbeat, and
can get out of whack with
age. After two weeks of daily
15-minute sessions, subjects
reported improved sleep,
mood and quality of life.
