“WhenyouconnectintoWicca,
youjustseethingsa bitdifferently.
Yougetawayfromthepettinessof
life.Yougetawayfromthe
whirlwind.Sometimesyoujust
needtostop,meditatea littlebit,
turnintoyourselfandbetrueto
yourself.That’s oneofthebiggest
thingsI liketobringthroughwith
thejewellery– beingtruetoyourself.
Thefreedomofgoing,‘Thisis me,
thisis whoI am.’Wickenembraces
youasa woman.”
Butofcourse,therewasthematter
oflearninghowtoactually,youknow,
makejewellery– a completelynew
skillforKim.Sheeventuallytoldher
husbandaboutthesecretprojectshe’d
beenworkingonandheencouraged
her to go and learn the art. So she
wenttoa jewellery-makingworkshop
in Kingslandandbegantheprocess
fromscratch.
It wasclearfromthestartthat
thepiecesshewasworkingonwere
somewhatdifferentfromwhather
fellowjewellerynoviceswerecreating.
“Iremembercuttingoutthelittlebat
necklaceandtheyallthoughtI was
mad,”shelaughs.Butshe’sgotthe
lastlaugh– in theyearssince,the
batnecklacehasbecomeoneof
thebiggestsellers.
Allofthepiecesareimbuedwith
meaningsthatfitwithWicken’score
values:empowerment,andturning
stereotypicallybad,“witchy”symbols
ontheirheads.Thatbat,forexample,
representsstrength,happinessand
self-care.“Goingbacktothecave,
goingbacktoMotherEarth,”Kim
says.“Theyrejuvenate,theyrest,and
whenthey’reready,theyhavethe
strengthtoflybackout.
“I found exploring those originalmeaningsofwhata witchis,and
everythingthat’sassociatedwith
it,tobethecompleteoppositeof
whatwe’vebeentaughtortold.The
broom?It’stohelpclearoutnegative
energy.Blackcats?They’reactually
goodluck.”Theworldofthewitch,
Kimsays,“isa muchsaferplacethan
whatwehavebeentoldit is”.Chainreactions
Oncethecollectionshiftedfrom
beinga feverdreamtoa reality,Kim
knewshehadtotakeit ontheroad.
It wasearly2016,andshefound
a communitysheknewwell,that
wouldbewelcomingtoa bat-shaped
necklace– theGreenhitheHealing
Haven,a wellnessmarketheldon
Auckland’sNorthShore.
“Istartedseeingtheinterest
immediately,”Kimsays.“People
wouldwalkbyandthenthey’d
backtrack.You’dseethelittleglint
