WhenwastheSidmouthPhotographic

Clubfounded?

Theclubwasfoundedin 1937ontheinitiative

of a localdoctor,GeraldGibbens,andcalled

theSidmouthCameraClub.Anearlymember,

HaroldFish,servedin theRoyalNavyandwas

anofficialphotographerat theJapanese

surrenderof HongKongin September1945.

TheclubnamewaslaterchangedtoSidmouth

PhotographicClubtobetterreflectmember

interestsin thefinishedresultratherthan

equipment.Thisethosstillholdstruetoday.

Describea typicalclubmeeting.

Clubeveningsarea mixtureof visiting

speakers,competitions,andinteractive

sessionsinvolvingtutorials,practicaland

critiquesessions.Theseareaimedat inspiring

andenhancingourphotographicskills,aswell

asfortheenjoymentof looking at other

people’sphotography.

Whatdoesyourcluboffertonewmembers?

Theclubis keentowelcomenewmembers.

Beforejoining,prospectivemembersare

encouraged to sample some club evenings

toseewhatwedo.Ourprogrammeof

meetingswillsuitnewmemberswitha variety

of interestsandphotographicknowledge,

andweorganise‘knowyourcamera’sessions

forbeginners,aswellas tutorials on a wide

rangeof subjects.

Doyouinviteguestspeakers?

Ourprogrammealwaysincludessomeguest

speakers,mostlyfromtheWestCountryarea.

Domemberscompetein regionalor

nationalcompetitions?

Theclubtakespartin severalinterclub

competitionslocallyin theDevonarea;

individualmembers,andtheclubasa whole,

participatein Federationcompetitions.Wealso

haveaninternationalthree-wayexchangewith

clubsfromtheNetherlandsandFinland.

Howmanymembersdoyouhave?

Membershipfluctuatesbetween 45 and50,

asnewmembersjoinandothersleave,and

betweena thirdanda halfof ourmembersare

female.Meetingsarewellattendedwithmore

than75%of ourmembers actively involved on

a regularbasis.

Arethereanyresidentialtripsoroutings

plannedfortheyearahead?

Theclubrunsoutingsandwalksthroughout

theyear.Photographicwalkstakeplacelocally

in thesummermonthsandareasmuchsocial

occasionsasphotographicexpeditions,usually

involvinga pubsomewhere.Recentoutings

furtherafieldhavebeentripstoBristoland

totheSomersetcoast,anda two-dayvisitto

Londonforsomenightphotography. Similar

tripsareplannedfortheyear.

Whataretheclub’sgoalsforthefuture?

Oneof ourgoalsis tobroadenour

membershiptoincludephotographersfor

whomthesmartphoneis thecameraof choice.
