The making of the 2019 Person of the Year issue

After sailing back to Europe, Greta Thunberg rested for a day, then returned to the sea

for the TIME cover shoot on Dec. 4. Photographer Evgenia Arbugaeva, who grew up

in the Russian Arctic, scouted Lisbon for two days before choosing a rocky beach near

the city. “It seemed that the day of the shoot on the beach was the last quiet moment

for Greta,” Arbugaeva says. The next day, both boarded the night train to Madrid,

the U.N. climate conference and a crowd of tens of thousands.
