■ Brian Reade’s
nostalgic report from
New Brighton paints a
picture of a resort that
has seen hard times but
is now bouncing back
(August 22).
Six years ago my
partner and I invested in
a bookshop there,
despite being told that
books were on the way
out, as were seaside
resorts.
Brian’s feature
illustrated so well the
fact that New Brighton
is a coastal place where
past meets present with
an optimistic nod to
the future.
The late, great Sir Ken
Dodd loved the place,
so we’re now building a
Doddy Rockery in our
shop’s back garden to
celebrate his belief
in the town.
Thank you, Brian, for
reminding readers that
New Brighton is on
the up.

Literally A Bookshop
New Brighton
A seaside
specia l...
sent shockwaves through me. The
NHS would be ripped apart without
a thought for the British people.
We, as a nation, can’t allow Trump
and his Big Pharma cronies to get a
foot in the door.
The mess the Tories have got this
country into is a disgrace and should
never be allowed to happen again.
Michael Maher
Ashton-under-Lyne, Gtr Manchester
■ I think it’s time for the British
public to inform Boris Johnson that
the NHS should not be part of any
discussions on future trade deals
with the US because this is the finest
health service in the world.
The NHS was set up by a Labour
government and we will not allow
the Tories to destroy it.
Harold Ennis
Ruardean, Glos
■ It’s wrong to think a
post-Brexit trade deal
with the US will bring
the sword down upon
our jewel of a health-
care system.
It could be the voice
of sanity ringing down
as a hand reaches out
to lift us up and help us rebuild
again.
The influx of medication and nous
coming into the country surely
could kick our own red tape to the
gutter, give us new medication and
save more lives.
Our recent history of being in the
EU has been an absolute disgrace

  • things can’t get any worse.
    Ashley Smith, March, Cambs
    ■ Trump must never be allowed to
get his hands on our NHS. We must
all fight tooth and nail to protect our
    wonderful health service from the
    profit-hungry American private
    medical firms, otherwise we’ll end
up with a system where if you can’t
    pay you won’t get treated.
    Whether you support
    Brexit or not, surely
    people don’t want this?
    D Green, Sheffield
    ■ If Boris Johnson does
    a trade deal with
    Trump, the Americans
    will run the UK.
    This country has
    been sold down the
    river by successive
    governments.

US deal will suck

life from our NHS

■ Thank you, Daily Mirror, for your
special report on how our NHS
would face tremendous financial
pressure if President Trump ever got
his mitts on it (August 21).
Unfortunately, many of those who
voted to leave the EU are unlikely to
read your warning of the disaster
that would befall our most revered
public service in the event of a US
trade deal.
Perhaps it should be emblazoned
on buses and posters all over the
c ountr y. Final ly, w hy o h w hy w on’t
someone recommend revoking
Article 50?
If agreed by parliament, it would
mean we could forget all about this
unnecessary chaos and start dealing
with the fundamental issues
affecting all our lives.
Sandra Walter, South East London
■ Successive Tory governments over
the years have tried to bring down
the NHS by starving it of funds, but
any trade deal with Trump could
finish off the people’s health service
for good.
Greedy US health firms are waiting
to take advantage of a no-deal
Brexit so they can cherry-pick the
most profitable parts.
Grassroots Labour
supporters must forget the
infighting and leadership
preferences, and whole-
heartedly get behind the
party in the event of a
general election to keep
the NHS safely in the
people’s hands.
Neil Atherton
St Helens, Merseyside
■ Reading about what
would happen if Trump got
his dirty hands on our NHS

A no-deal Brexit would leave the NHS vulnerable
to profit-driven US health firms which could push
it to bankruptcy, according to campaigners.
Without price controls, the NHS could end up
paying up to seven times more for operations and
100 times more for some medicines. You say...

This is my uncle Alfred Card at work as a radio operator
with the Desert Rats in North Africa during the Second
World War. He had to be invalided out of the Army as he
contracted pneumonia, but he was still able to continue
his service by becoming an air-raid warden in East
London. Uncle Alfred, like many members of the Card
family, was also a talented artist.

Yes. Phil and Holly are great
fun to watch in the mornings.
I’d love to see more of them
instead of the depressing
Jeremy Kyle Show.
PRINCESSELSA89

No. They need to change
the name from ITV to the
Phil and Holly channel.
Nothing makes me turn off
faster than when they
appear on the screen.
CATHERINEOFARAGON

No. Keep Judge
Rinder on. I’m kind
of getting used to
watching him now.
RUTH WINTWER

No. For heaven’s sake,
not more of these two
smug people. It’s bad
enough for two hours.
JACKIEMITCH

ITV is planning to replace the axed
Jeremy Kyle Show with a bumper
edition of This Morning, hosted by
Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby,
who are in line for huge pay rises.

Is this a good

idea?

Yes. An extra dose
of the ‘Silver Fox’ is
far better than Kyle.
Good choice!
LAULAU01

Yes. Given all the rubbish
they could have put on
instead of Kyle, a bit more
of This Morning isn’t the
worst option.

■ The person with the
hardest job in Downing

If ever an example of

Boris achieved it on his

It seems not all
consultants are
successful making a silk
purse out of a sow’s ear!

■ Another week another

someone told him to buy

and he got it wrong! God

Jade... a star who

still shines bright
What a moving and powerful three-part
documentary Jade: The Reality Star Who
Changed Britain was on Channel 4.
It’s been 10 years since Jade Goody passed
away from a very public battle with cervical
cancer, but she’s still very much in everyone’s
thoughts. Her death at only 27 has encouraged
many more young women to go for smear tests.
Jade was the reality star who broke the
mould and was the ultimate Big Brother
housemate who will always be remembered.
