VUNIPOLA:
IMPROVE
OR YOU’RE
GONDOLA
As buoyant England head to Venice training camp talisman Billy warns
Red Roses to match Irish rout away from home or face World Cup woe
BILLY VUNIPOLA believes
England must reproduce
their Ireland demolition job
on foreign soil if they are
serious about winning the
World Cup.
Eddie Jones’ team broke
every record for the fixture
with their biggest victory,
largest winning margin and
most tries scored against a side
that were 80 minutes from
going top of the world rankings.
England, who this week
return to Italy for their final
training camp, are now as low
as 4/1 to triumph in Japan and
players and coach alike insist
they will only get better.
Vunipola is as encouraged as
anyone by the way his team
“didn’t let up”, mercilessly
putting Ireland to the sword.
“There were times we could
have taken our foot off the
accelerator,” he said. “But even
the dead moments, we were
alive. It showed that if we keep
our heads down and keep
working, we can take teams
to a place they’re not
comfortable.”
No sooner had he said that
however than he was
reminding Jones that the place
England are not comfortable is
away from Twickenham. “I’d
like to see that performance
away from home. That is the
biggest thing for me,” said
Vunipola, the memory of last
week’s try-less defeat in Wales
fresh in his mind.
“I said it to Eddie. It is
something we need to start
doing away from Twickenham.
The challenge is to go to Japan
and do it away from all our fans
and the comforts of our home
changing room.”
England struck the right
emotional balance after
rampaging to eight tries but
again losing prop Mako
Vunipola to injury.
Justifiably buzzing at how
the carefully-selected
combinations of Owen Farrell
and George Ford and Sam
Underhill and Tom Curry
harvested possession, turning
it into scoring opportunity.
Thrilled to see Manu Tuilagi
recapture his thunderous 2012
form and Joe Cokanasiga
answer Jones’ call to get more
involved with two sparkling
tries. But wise to the fact that
Ireland, who missed 34 tackles
and could not buy a lineout, are
at a very different stage in their
World Cup preparation. “We’ll
just keep our feet on the
ground,’ said Jones. “We’re
massively fitter, you can see
that, we’ve got body-shape
changes. But I’m not too
optimistic that we’re better
than we should be.
“I’ve seen this happen before.
Ireland could have been doing
fitness training for the last
week-and-a-half and no rugby,
so you’ve got to take everything
into consideration.”
Jones has billed this week’s
camp on the outskirts of Venice
as a blood, sweat and beers trip
- “we do have some drinking
sessions” – but his message
remains the same. Improve or
you’re gondola.

ADAM REPLIES WITH RECORD
BY ALEX SPINK
ADAM GEMILI took a pot shot at
British athletics bosses after
emphatically proving he is much
more than just a relay runner.
On a red-hot day in Birmingham,
Gemili reclaimed his British 200
metres crown, shattering the
two-year-old championship record.
His success, a day after taking
silver in the 100m, means he
