RED

STORM

RISING

Trouble is brewing at United and even

new kid James recognises it as he

talks of needing to seek REDemption

BY JEREMY CROSS
THE sun might have been
shining on Old Trafford but
storm clouds are gathering
over Manchester United.
The opening weekend of the
new season, when United
thrashed Chelsea 4-0, already
feels like a distant dream.
It has taken the Reds just two
more matches to remind
supporters of the glaring failures
that have left them with what
appears to be another season of
serious toil ahead.
Including the dismal end to
last season, United have now
won just three of their last 15
games in all competitions.
We are still in August but
already new signing Daniel
James is talking about gaining
redemption when they travel to
Southampton this weekend.
James, who has now been
booked in successive games
for diving, is learning what a
rollercoaster ride life can be
at Old Trafford.
The £15million winger
(right) said: “We want to
redeem ourselves. This
game is something that
we’ll look back on and
look at what we could
have done better. But the
Southampton game next
week will be a completely
different test – and we’ve
got to be ready for it.”
This was an afternoon
to forget for Ole Gunnar
Solskjaer and his team.
But putting nightmares

like this one behind them is
easier said than done.
Crystal Palace came to town
without a win or goal to their
name this season – and hadn’t
triumphed at Old Trafford since

  1. No one saw it coming.
    Poor defending allowed
    Jordan Ayew to fire Palace
    ahead before half-time when
the United defence failed to deal
with a simple hoof upfield from
    goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.
And things went from bad to
    worse for the home side.
    Marcus Rashford – not the
    ineffective Paul Pogba – missed
a penalty on 69 minutes after
    Luka Milivojevic had tripped
    Scott McTominay.
    Rashford and Pogba also fired
    wide with ambitious free-kicks.
All looked lost until the final
    minute of normal time
    when Rashford and
    Anthony Martial
    combined to set up

James, who curled a delightful
equaliser into the top corner.
Home fans demanded
another goal, in a hark back to
the romantic times under Sir
Alex Ferguson. There was one,
but it came at the opposite end.
A counter-attack from Palace
ended with Patrick van Aanholt
drilling a low shot through the
grasp of David De Gea with
almost the last kick of the game.
In the process, Van Aanholt
became the first-ever visiting
player to score a stoppage-time
winner at United in the Premier
League. Remarkable.
Just to rub salt into United’s
gaping wounds, ref Paul Tierney
denied them a clear penalty
when Martin Kelly pulled down
Martial, while VAR refused
another one when Rashford
tumbled under a challenge from
the same defender.
Palace boss Roy Hodgson
reckons United might be
vulnerable to more
smash-and-grab raids by
lesser rivals this season.
He said: “They have to
come to terms with the
fact that teams in the
lower half of the league,
if they are organised
and disciplined, will be
hard to break down.
“And if they have
players in their side
that can hurt them on
the counter-attack...
that is what Old
Trafford should expect
this season.”
