RATINGS by JOHN CROSS
TOTTENHAM
LLORIS
Wonderful save at 0-0
to deny Longstaff.
Largely a spectator.
WALKER-PETERS
Another solid audition,
went off with
hamstring injury.
ALDERWEIRELD
Tottenham’s leader in
defence, stepped out
with confidence.
SANCHEZ
Can look vulnerable in
defence, Vertonghen
must be frustrated.
ROSE
Booked. Tenacious and
determined. Arguably
Spurs’ best player.
WINKS
Booked. Tried to get
Spurs moving, but if
there is no movement...
SISSOKO
His every touch booed
by Toon army, ended
up at right-back.
SON
Welcome return to
action, denied by a
smart save.
LAMELA
Poch is giving him
every chance but he is
struggling to take it.
LUCAS
Missed two big chances
but also denied by
some heroic defending.
KANE
Does he have to do
everything himself?
Starved of service.

DUBRAVKA
Good saves and did
well as his goal was
often under siege.
KRAFTH
Stuck to his task well at
right-back, restricted
Spurs down his flank.
SCHAR
Good defending, read
the danger and always
looked composed.
LASCELLES
Showed true leadership
qualities but lucky to
escape penalty appeal.
DUMMETT
Heroic defending, put
his body on the line
with big headers.
RITCHIE
Booked. Defending
does not always look
his natural game.
HAYDEN
Reliable. If he were at
more fashionable club,
he’d get England call.
SAINT-MAXIMIN
Went off injured early
on after pulling his
hamstring.
LONGSTAFF
Tireless work in
midfield, good breaks
forward.
ALMIRON
Worked hard with little
reward. Had a good
ding-dong with Rose.
JOELINTON
Booked. Fabulous
finish for Newcastle’s
opener.

Fernandez (Lascelles 82)
for Harry Winks in
Tottenham’s midfield as time
after time he had the ball at his
feet but players ahead were not
moving for him.
There was a warning sign for
Spurs in the 23rd minute when
Sean Longstaff saw a fierce drive
pushed over by Hugo Lloris.
Shortly afterwards, Newcastle
substitute Christian Atsu played
in Joelinton who controlled it
with his right foot and fired it in
with his left, demonstrating why
Newcastle spent £40million for
him in the summer.
Newcastle battened down the
hatches and spread five across
the back. Keeper Martin
Dubravka made smart saves and,
even when he spilled one, Moura
fired the rebound wide.
Eriksen was thrown on with
Spurs running out of time but
when Kane got away from his
man in the box in the 80th
minute, Lascelles threw himself
towards the ball and stopped the
striker. Yet neither Dean nor VAR
gave a penalty. A minute later,
Moussa Sissoko’s cross found
Moura in the box and he fired
over. It was the final chance gone.
Incredibly, this was Newcastle’s
fourth win in six years at
Tottenham and this, like the rest,
owed much to the home side
coming up well short.
Paul Dummett
was as good as
anyone, kick-
ing and
heading
any ball t h a t
came his way.
It was d e s p e r a t e
stuff at times,
but Newcastle
SERGEY KOVA-
LEV dug in and
defied Spurs.
The worry for
Mauricio Po-
c h e t - tino was that
h i s Spurs side,
n o t f o r t h e f i r s t
time this sea- son, looked
desperately short of inspiration
and ideas. They struggled to open
up the visitors.
In their opening game of the
season against Aston Villa, they
trailed until Eriksen came on to
inspire them. Even at Manchester
City last week they were lucky to
get a draw. There are worrying
signs for Pochettino.
A lack of creativity and ideas
is the biggest issue. Though
Eriksen has only one year left
on his contract, you can see
why Pochettino does not
want to lose him. Erik Lamela
is getting his chance and not
taking it, Giovani Lo Celso is
still finding his feet. You felt sorry
even video technology is far from
foolproof on big late penalty
appeals. How anyone could think
Jamaal Lascelles’ dive to stop
Harry Kane heading for goal was
not a penalty is anyone’s guess.
Referee Mike Dean bottled
making a decision. He left it to
Stockley Park and they missed it
as well. Incredible.
But that would have been
heartbreaking for Newcastle,
who gave everything and fought
like warriors to hang on to the
lead given them by Brazilian
striker Joelinton in the 27th
minute.
Maybe the more you throw at
Newcastle, the more you tip them
for relegation, the more you
ridicule manager Bruce, the more
they fight to prove you wrong.
Newcastle’s home-grown hero
After weeks of flak, Bruce finally
has something to smile about
ON a day of sporting heroics
and defiance, no-one saw this
result coming.
Certainly not Newcastle boss
Steve Bruce, who celebrated at the
final whistle with a muted smile
and a hug for each of his players.
For once the Toon Army in the
away end could be excused for
taking their shirts off to celebrate
on a gloriously hot day in north
London.
But you can probably under-
stand why Bruce chose not to go
over to the away end after the
game considering the amount of
stick he has taken from his own
supporters this season.
It was one of those results that
stands out in any season because
this was supposed to be a nailed-
on home win.
Newcastle looked like going
rock-bottom and yet pulled off an
unlikely away triumph.
Tottenham, in contrast, were
awful. Devoid of ideas and
movement, they looked hor-
ribly flat and even another
Christian Eriksen cameo
appearance from the bench
could not save them.
Lucas Moura (right) missed
two sitters and there was more
anger towards VAR as it seems
