IN ASSOCIATION
WITH
MANAGEMENT
BY TONY BANKS
BOURNEMOUTH manager Eddie Howe
admitted he fears wing back Charlie Daniels
could be in for another lengthy injury lay-off
after being rushed to hospital with a
suspected dislocated knee.
Daniels was carried off in agony (above)
after going down just after putting in a cross.
It was a heartbreaking moment for the
Cherries defender, who had only just returned
to the squad after a knee injury in March.
Howe said: “It’s potentially serious – to see
a player go off on a stretcher in the amount of
pain he was, you fear the worst. We’re
concerned for him.
“It’s a real blow for the club especially as
he’s worked so hard to get back fit.
Desperately disappointing.”
Howe, though, was delighted with on-loan
Harry Wilson’s superb free kick, which briefly
hauled his side back into the match minutes
after he had come on for Daniels.
He said: “It was an incredible goal. I saw him
doing it so many times for Derby last year in
big games for them. We needed that lift at
that time. That gave us a lifeline.
“We did have chances and that’s the
frustrating thing.
“Comparing this to previous games against
City, we created so much more. We were a
constant menace to them.”
HOWE’S FEARING

PEP’S SILVA LINING
played incredibly well. David in this kind of
game - with a defence so deep and with such
few spaces - is so good. He’s one of the best
players I’ve ever seen.”
Following a game that saw four
bookings and Cherries midfielder
Charlie Daniels carried off with a
suspected dislocated knee,
Guardiola said: “We knew it was
going to be a tough game and
felt it. There are things to improve.
“Bournemouth set up so deep, they
played long balls to Josh King and Callum
Wilson and were stronger than us in the boxes.
“But the quality of our front players made
the difference.”
Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe (above)
said: “City had to be physical because we
were. We had a lot of pace and power.”
FROM FRONT PAGE
Revved-up Aguero responds to spat with
Guardiola by blasting a brilliant double
BY TONY BANKS
PERHAPS Sergio
Aguero should have
a few more touch-
line rows with Pep
Guardiola.
They certainly
seem to inspire the
Argentinian.
And planting a
few well-chosen
words in the ear
of the club’s re-
cord goalscorer
clearly works for
City’s
perfectionist,
demanding
manager. Even if the
striker does not like it.
Aguero, who did not
please his manager last
week as VAR denied City in
their draw with Tottenham
and was not happy at being
hauled off. Yesterday he
was much a much happier
bunny, as was Guardiola.
The South American
scored two typical poachers
goals to crush
Bournemouth’s hopes and
keep his team in touch with
early leaders Liverpool.
Aguero’s strikes sand-
wiched a goal from Raheem
Sterling, and though Harry
Wilson delivered a glorious
free-kick for Bournemouth
just before half-time, City
were never really in danger
in a physical battle.
This time, VAR was not
enough to deny Guardiola’s
team a win, though it did
for the third game running,
frustrate his team.
David Silva, who had a
sublime 400th City
appearance, was hauled
down in the area by Jeffer-
son Lerma’s tackle. But the
technology amazingly
ruled no penalty.
Fortunately this time it
did not matter.
City had assumed
control at the Vitality Sta-
dium almost from the off,
and though Eddie Howe’s
team battled hard and
caused them problems,
they never
looked likely
to cause an
upset.
Guardiola
and Aguero
made up after
their spat last
week, and
even shared a
hug before the
end of the
game. Yester-
day there was
not even a
suggestion of a tiff.
Bournemouth did not
manage a shot in this
fixture last year when they
lost 1-0 and had just 18 per
cent of the possession.
This was much better
though, as Josh King tested
Ederson in the first minute.
City soon got their game
going though, as Bernardo
Silva saw his shot deflected
wide. Then David Silva fed
Oleksandr Zinchenko,
whose low cross was mishit
by Kevin De Bruyne, but
Aguero was onto the loose
ball in a flash to stab it in.
David Silva’s volley was
then well saved by Aaron
Ramsdale, but the Cherries
should have been level
when a misunderstanding
between Nicolas Otamendi
and Ederson saw Adam
Smith nip in, but the goal-
keeper luckily
managed to
deflect his
shot over with
his face.
Those are
the moments
you need to
capitalise on
against City.
Two minutes
before half-
time Bourne-
mouth paid
the price, as
David Silva turned and
threaded a superb ball
through to Sterling, who
made no mistake.
But Bournemouth were
back in it just before the
break. Callum Wilson was
fouled and Harry Wilson,
on for the injured Charlie
Daniels, curled a glorious
free-kick over the wall and
into the top corner.
The tackles were flying
in, but Bournemouth were
creating chances, Adam
Smith putting Wilson
through only for Ederson to
dash out and block.
City recovered their
poise though, and struck
again. Zinchenko played
the ball in, David Silva
danced through several
tackles but the ball ran
loose, and Aguero thumped
home for his 400th goal for
club and country.
Dominic Solanke twice
had chances to make things
awkward for City, first
racing through only to scuff
his shot and see Ederson
save, and then failing to
take advantage as the
keeper dived at his feet.
