Hasenhuttl: New hero
Djenepo can bank
us a fortune.. and so
can our academy kids
BY IAN BAKER
RALPH HASENHUTTL is
already banking on Moussa
Djenepo earning Saints
more mega bucks.
The £14million summer
signing from Standard Liege
announced himself in English
football in emphatic style with
a wonder 55th-minute goal at
Brighton only seconds after
coming on as a second sub.
And Hasenhuttl insists
Djenepo, 21, can be so good
Southampton can make
another massive profit on a
player – just like they did with
Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk.
Boss Hasenhuttl said: “If you
pay a lot of money – and for us
of happiness and brings a lot of
joy. He is enjoying life, enjoying
the ball, and enjoying the
music in the dressing room, all
sorts of things.
“But he’s not necessarily
making practical jokes yet!
“He’s been great. He’s very
quick, he’s very sharp, his
movement is very tough to
grasp.
“I’m happy with what he
brings to our team.
“If he can come in and be
anywhere close to Sadio Mane
that’ll do for us.”
Southampton confirmed
their first victory of the season
when star man Nathan
Redmond scored a deserved
goal in injury time following
good work by Sofiane Boufal.
Redmond added: “It’s a lot of
fun playing with Sofiane.
“We try and play with each
other in training and we barely
try to pass to anyone else if
we’re on the same team!”
healthy way for a club. Moussa
was our target for a long time.
“In winter we also wanted to
sign him but it wasn’t possible.
“But we stayed working on
this transfer and it’s important
for the player he sees we really
wanted to have him, and the
philosophy that we want to
play I think fits well – and the
reason he came to us.”
It was another uninspiring
performance from
Southampton until Djenepo’s
introduction against a side
reduced to 10 men after a
horror tackle by Florin Andone
on Yan Valery on the half-hour.
But the Mali star is looking
the part on and off the pitch

  • bringing noise to the Saints’
dressing room as well as flair
    on it.
    Defender Jannik Vestergaard
said: “He seems to enjoy life.
He’s a very happy guy with a lot

this transfer fee was a lot of
money – then you must do it
on a player who gives you a
fantasy that he will one day be
a big star and then we get a lot
of money for him.
“In any other way it doesn’t
make sense for Southampton
to buy a player for more than
£10m. The rest we must get
out of our Academy.
“That’s the way we want to
go. It’s not easy, but it’s a very

LEANDRO TROSSARD
defended Florin Andone
following his X-rated tackle
on Yan Valery.
Brighton had to play 60
minutes with 10 men after
the Romanian caught the
Southampton defender’s
shin with his studs.
Former England and
Arsenal star Paul Merson

described the tackle as
“worthy of five red cards.”
But Trossard said: “It
was never his
intention to hurt
their player. He
tried to use his
body to block him
and was unlucky.
“The tackle was
accidental and he
apologised to the team

afterwards because he put
the team in a difficult
position but these
things can happen
to any footballer.
“Red cards
are part of
football and all
we can do is just
be there to support
him and the team.
“It’s obviously difficult

when you go down to 10
men after 30 minutes but
we must keep going.”
Brighton also had a
second goal in as many
games disallowed – this
time through Lewis Dunk’s
header with Dan Burn
offside.
Trossard added: “We
haven’t had luck with VAR
decisions so far.”

THEY SAID IT...
It didn’t look like a great tackle.
That’s not a tackle we want to see.
I don’t think he’s meant to do it,
but it’s one we can’t defend. We
tried to be positive with 10 men.

Southampton have won each of
their last three away games
against Brighton in all
competitions, keeping a clean
sheet each time.
Brighton have scored just eight
goals in their last 14 Premier League
home games, and never more than
once in a match in that run.
Three of the last four Premier
League red cards shown by
referee Kevin Friend have been to
Brighton players (Shane Duffy v
Crystal Palace, Anthony Knockaert
v Bournemouth and Florin Andone
today).
Moussa Djenepo’s goal for
Southampton – his first in the
Premier League – came with his first
touch in the match and just 78
seconds after coming on as a
second half substitute.
