DEAL OF THE WEEK
JAYDEN GOES
BACK TO BE A
STAR TURN
BY LINDSAY SUTTON
BIG Jayden Stockley
watched team-mate Daniel
Johnson convert two
penalties, then did his bit to
make sure Preston hung on
for the win.
The 6ft 3in tall striker
was pressed into service as
an extra defender when
Sheffield Wednesday threw
everything at the hosts in
the final 12 minutes after
Steve Fletcher got them
back in the game.
“It was nervy as we
battled to hold on to our
lead,” admitted Stockley
(above, getting a whack in
the face from Moses
Odubajo). “I’ve never
played at the back before,
but you have to do these
things when required.”
Wednesday put on subs
Atdhe Nuhiu, Fernando
Forestieri and Adam Reach
and went long to try to claw
something from the match.
Stockley, bought from
Exeter in January for
£750,000 after 16 goals in
25 games, was quite happy
to deal with the hustling,
high-ball bombardment.
“They sent on their guys
to pressure us and get in
the troublesome balls,” he
said. “We had to cut them
out and we just about did.”
Referring to the
penalties, both given away
by defender Odubajo, Owls’
caretaker boss Lee Bullen
admitted: “Two mistakes
cost us.”
Wednesday defender
Morgan Fox added: “We
were undone by the
penalties. That lost us the
game, but it wasn’t just
Moses – we all lost the
match. Moses is a good pro
and will deal with it.”

Jordan vows: I can be
deadly 20-goal hit-man
BY HECTOR NUNNS
JORDAN HUGILL shrugged
off a miss-of-the-season
contender to get back on the
goal trail at QPR.
The 27-year-old striker was an
£8million misfit at West Ham
after a move from Preston – and
never started a Premier League
game.
But Hugill, who incredibly
scooped over from a yard with his
first touch off the bench, soon
coolly slotted home the killer
third goal.
That made it three in five
Championship games on loan
from the Hammers with a point
to prove – and piled the pressure
on Wigan boss Paul Cook.
The Latics have now lost
five in a row and a second-half
collapse saw Cook admit
“someone else will be
standing here” if results
didn’t improve.
But it was a
happier day for
Hugill – and
he could
afford to
laugh about
his howler.
Sub Hugill,
who might
have had a
hat-trick,
said: “The
manager believes I should be a
20-goal-a-season striker and after
three in five games, who is to say
I can’t be?
“I do set targets for myself, and
that’s not mine – but mine is
personal! The miss – it was my
first touch, and a lapse in
concentration.
“It was a bad one but you can’t
let it get to you.
“Luckily though, I kept my head
and put the second chance away.
“I will have to see it on Soccer
AM and everywhere – maybe it is
best to stay away from social
media. It has worked out well at
QPR. The manager told me I fit
our system, we are an attacking
side, and that I’ll get goals.”
New Rangers boss Mark
Warburton (below) made six
changes for this match and his
team looked like strangers in the
first half. But after the break they
rattled in goals from Nahki Wells,
Ebere Eze and Hugill after
Cedric Kipre’s second-
minute opener for
Latics.
Hugill added: “The
players are still getting
to know each other, but you can
see it happening. We are starting
to become a close unit.”
There were calls for Cook to get
the sack from Wigan fans after
another away defeat.
Huddersfield have already axed
Jan Siewert in the first month of
the campaign. But Hugill had
sympathy for Cook, who saw
Rangers’ sub Matt Smith (below,
right) confront Callum Lang.
He added: “With the money in
football, it is tough.
“We know it is a results-based
industry but you never like to see
anyone lose their job.
“It is cut-throat at times, for
managers and players. If it was me
not scoring goals, people would
be saying the same about me.
“I think Wigan will be OK, Paul
Cook is a great guy.”
