LEAGUE TWO
BOSS Colin Calderwood
lamented Cambridge’s
lack of nous after David
Wheater won it for
Oldham.
Urko Vera put the
Latics ahead and Marc
Richards soon levelled.
But Wheater struck
from a corner to leave
Calderwood fuming. He
said: “Some of the things
we do look as if they’re
not too clever. We’ve
absolutely given away a
game we couldn’t lose.”
SCUNTHORPE manager
Paul Hurst reckons his
side’s winless start
should already be over.
Instead, his team find
themselves bottom of
the table thanks to Joe
Ironside’s 54th-minute
penalty for Macclesfield.
Hurst said: “There is
no doubt we should be
winning this game, but
we haven’t.
“The record books
don’t look at how you
lose the game.”
MICHAEL JOLLEY hailed
Grimsby’s goal power as
they put five past Vale.
Jordan Cook, Moses
Ogbu, Matt Green, Luke
Waterfall and James
Hanson were all on target.
Vale’s goals came from
Elliott Whitehouse’s OG
and Nathan Smith.
Boss Jolley said: “When
you have a goal threat,
you’re always in the
game.” Vale boss John
Askey said: “One or two
didn’t work hard enough.”
RYAN TAYLOR ended a
16-month goal drought at
the double.
The Argyle striker said:
“It’s a bit of relief to be
honest. The longer you
go without scoring the
pressure builds up.”
Sub Antoni Sarcevic
was the other scorer but
got himself sent off for a
reckless tackle.
New Saddlers boss
Darrell Clarke said: “For
me, the honeymoon is
well and truly over.”
CHRIS HUSSEY reckons
Cheltenham’s home form
can turn them into
contenders.
Eoin Doyle scored
twice for Swindon, who
had Michael Doughty
sent off. Hussey and Luke
Varney were on target
for Cheltenham, who
have taken seven of their
eight points at home.
Hussey said: “If you
want to do well, you’ve
got to have that sort of
form at home.”
GRECIANS boss Matt
Taylor left Morecambe
with mixed feelings.
Jake Taylor and Lee
Martin put Exeter two up
only for a brace from
Lewis Alessandra before
Nicky Law won it late on.
Taylor said: “I’m sat
there and delighted to
start with and then I feel
the emotions of
disappointment, and
anger to a certain extent,
that we’ve not controlled
the game better at 2-0.”
FOREST GREEN chief
executive Henry
Staelens was fuming
because Bradford
barred him from their
boardroom for not
wearing a tie.
“Like it was the
1960s or something,”
tweeted Staelens, 30.
“Enjoyed watching from
the away end and taking
three points home.”
Joseph Mills grabbed
a stoppage-time winner
for the visitors.
LEYTON ORIENT old
boy Ollie Palmer came
off the bench to win it
for Crawley with two
goals in three minutes.
Josh Wright and Lee
Angol put the O’s ahead
either side of Nathan
Ferguson’s leveller,
before striker Palmer
poached a pair of goals.
Crawley boss Gabriele
Cioffi knows Palmer
wants to start. He said:
“That was the best way
to show your anger.”
CHRIS LINES revealed
the Cobblers held an
instant inquest after
Luke Norris won it for
the U’s from the spot.
Norris held his nerve
after Shaun McWilliams
tripped Ben Stevenson.
Midfielder Lines said:
“It’s a group discussion.
We’re all in this
together and it’s the
way we get better.”
U’s boss John
McGreal said: “It was
thoroughly deserved.”
LEWIS COLLINS helped
create a last-gasp
winner on his league
debut for Newport.
The sub, 18, cut the
ball back smartly in a
move that saw Padraig
Amond tapping home.
Collins said: “To come
on and be involved in
the goal was a great
experience.”
The goal knocked
Crewe off top spot. Boss
Dave Artell said: “We
completely dominated.”
STEVEN PRESSLEY
would not condemn
Carlisle’s want-away
striker Hallam Hope for
missing a sitter.
Hope fired wide with
after Fela Olomola and
Stefan Scougall struck.
Boss Pressley said:
“He apologised, but
there’s no need. It’s
been hard for him, his
head’s been turned.”
Salford’s scorers were
Emmanuel Dieseruvwe
and Danny Whitehead.
DINO MAAMRIA hailed
Stevenage’s old heads
for earning a point.
Mansfield had a Ryan
Sweeney goal ruled out
for offside and Alex
MacDonald had an effort
cleared off the line.
Boro boss Maamria
said: “The experienced
players were
magnificent for us. Joel
Byrom was outstanding,
Chris Stokes was great,
Darren Newton never
stopped running.”

Spot of Pride for
Sam as he blanks
Albion hate mob
BY JANINE SELF
SAM JOHNSTONE admits he
will never silence the critics but
insists they will not drive him
away from social media.
The West Brom keeper’s penalty
save at Pride Park earned the
Baggies a point at the end of a week
when he had been blamed for an
Ovie Ejaria wonder strike against
Reading.
Travelling supporters hailed their
big stopper after he guessed
correctly to deny Martyn Waghorn
a second penalty.
Johnstone said: “I’ll
stay on social media. It’s
water off a duck’s back.
“I won’t be coming off
Instagram and Twitter
for a few comments. You
have your opinion on
me, you might think I’m
rubbish. It is what it is.
“All that matters to me
is my team-mates, my
manager, my goalie
coach. And when the
fans are loud like that at
away games, singing
your name, that also
gives us the extra edge to keep
going. I heard them singing and it
gave me confidence.
“Fans praise you, they say other
things but that’s just social media.”
The Baggies were
rocked by an early
spot-kick from
Waghorn, which beat
Johnstone.
Then the pair
duelled again with
the keeper emerging
triumphant.
This volatile
Midlands dust-up,
which saw Albion boss Slaven Bilic
sent off after two yellow cards
(below), looked like going the Rams
way following Waghorn’s opener.
But the striker could not beat
Johnstone a second time, which
proved costly when Kenneth
Zohore stepped up to convert a late
penalty to equalise.
The Rams have still to win at
home this season under Phillip
Cocu – but striker Jack
Marriott insists there
are no worrying
issues. He also
backed sidekick
Waghorn to keep
taking the penalties.
Marriott said: “It’s
still early days. We
enjoy playing in front
of our home fans,
with a few wins that will never be
an issue. We just need to be more
clinical.
“We have no trouble with Waggy
stepping up and taking the next
pen because that’s what he does.
“We’re all behind him.
You can see penalties
saved from the best
players in the world.”
