There is no escape for families in Yemen
who are fl eeing their homes because of war.
Thousands of children have nothing – no home,
no clean water, no food, and no hospital to go
to when they are ill or injured.

Many have no choice but to live on the streets
and beg for food. Will you help them?

The people of Yemen

are in urgent need.

Please help them today.

An American soprano has spoken of
her hurt and anger caused by “cruel”
verbal abuse and harassment from
opera critics whom she accuses of
body-shaming her.
Kathryn Lewek ’s performance as
Eurydice in a new and raunchy pro-
duction of Off enbach’s Orpheus in the
Underworld at the Salzburg festival has
been widely praised. But some writers
also reviewed her shape, describing
Lewek as “buxom ” and “stocky ”. One
wrote about the production’s direc-
tor, Barrie Kosky , making overweight
women in corsets spread their legs.
Lewek said her role in the produc-
tion was clearly a sexualised one and
her costumes include a black corset.

Hopes are rising that fresh talks can be
held in a bid to avert planned strikes
by British Airways pilots.
Members of the British Airline Pilots
Association (Balpa) are due to strike
on 9, 10 and 27 September, threaten-
ing huge disruption to fl ights.
But BA said last night that the union
had indicated it wanted to meet for
another attempt to resolve the pay
dispute. BA offi cials said : “This is
encouraging news for our customers.
We have continued to urge Balpa to
return to talks ... and are pleased by
this welcome development.”
In a letter to Balpa, Jason Mahoney
of BA said: “We have already reached
out to Acas to confi rm that we are eager
to talk, but to be clear this will be with-
out any preconditions. ”
A Balpa spokesman said: “We’ve
written to BA’s chief executive Alex
Cruz to meet on the basis that he said
he wants to resolve the dispute. We
want to hear what he’s got to off er ...
If Cruz has a breakthrough to off er we
look forward to hearing from him.”

people to comment on my body,” she
said. “I’m heavier now than I ever have
been in my life because I had a baby 10
months ago and I decided to breast-
feed her for at least a year.
“It’s not like I live under a rock, I
know that opera is both an audio and a
visual experience, but I was just really
surprised at the body -shaming.
“ The word buxom can be construed
as a compl iment, I guess, but OK don’t
describe me with the same kind of
words that you would describe a porn
star. It’s weird, and why are we com-
menting on women’s bodies anyway?”
Lewek, who has performed around
the world, posted details of her

experience on Twitter and said she
was overwhelmed by the support she
had received. But she was also shocked
by the “horror stories” she heard from
fellow professionals. “ It is not OK. My
colleagues deserve better than this.
“This is my fi rst brush with this kind
of verbal harassment and it has really
opened my eyes.”
On Twitter, Lewek describes how
she returned to the stage, as Queen of
the Night in the Metropolitan Opera’s

production of The Magic Flute, six
weeks after giving birth. Then fol-
lowed a world tour of the show.
“Dozens of airports and pitstops have
hosted my nursing sessions, and I’ve
also pumped breast milk in to bot-
tles in dressing rooms during wig and
makeup changes.”
She said she knew there were cruel
people in the world, “but before this
past week, it had not dawned on me
that such crass and petty cruelty could
be found among the supposedly highly
educated and cultured people that we
trust to discuss and critique art in its
highest form ”.
Lewek took particular off ence at an
article by the music and dance critic
of the German newspaper Die Welt,
Manuel Brug , in which he talked of
overweight women in corsets spread-
ing their legs.
Brug said the article was not a
review, but a report on a binge-watch-
ing Salzburg weekend. The point he
was trying to get across was about
the director, Kosky, p utting women
in “unsuitable” costumes. He was not
saying Lewek was fat, which would be
rude, but that she was overweight. He
used the German word dicke , which he
said was a neutral term.
He added: “If she is so sensitive why
is she showing herself the whole time
in this corset? It is interesting that the
thin ladies on stage all had dresses and
the not so thin ones have costumes
where you see a lot of her weight.”
