Atlantic front World weatherwatch Around the world
Violent thunderstorms in Poland
produced deadly lightning strikes
in the Tatra mountains last week,
killing fi ve people and injuring more
than 1 00. Visitors had been enjoying
clear conditions earl ier in the day,
before the weather turned severely.
It is not the fi rst time such an
incident has happened in the
mountain s, which rise up to more
than 2,000 metres. Four people died
in similar circumstances in 1937.
Elsewhere, Typhoon Bailu
aff ected parts of south-east Asia last
weekend. At least two people were
killed in the Philippines on Saturday
because of a combination of fl ooding
and landslides. The storm later hit
Taiwan and then China on Sunday.
A motorcyclist was killed in Taiwan
after hitting a fallen tree. Nearly
609cm of rain fell on the island,
cutting power to 12,000 households.
Meanwhile, Alaska has been
battling with unusually late
wildfi res. An ongoing drought and
record-breaking warmth earlier in
the summer has left parts of the
US state like a tinderbox. While
wildfi res are not uncommon in
Alaska, it is unusual for them to be
burning this late in the season. By
the end of last week, six sq miles
north of Anchorage were ablaze ,
with 83 structures destroyed.
