WAR IN RUSSIA

BOLSHEVIK CLAIMS

REFUTED BY FACTS

Considerable light is thrown on the claims of the Bolsheviks to
victories over General Denikin by the latest information received
by authoritative quarters, which tends to confirm the view that
these stories are greatly exaggerated, if not altogether groundless.
For example, the claim that a large part of Denikin’s cavalry was
captured is manifestly untrue, as Gen. Kamontoff, commanding
these mounted troops, which broke through the Bolshevik line in
South Russia, was in communication with the Commander-in-
Chief as late as Wednesday. The present position on the Southern
Russian front is as follows:
Odessa was lost to the Bolsheviks on Aug. 24. Volunteers
landed on the 23rd and captured the coast batteries south of
the town at Cape Fontana. Counter-attacks by the Red troops
were driven off by gun-fire from the ships. German colonists
and the suburban population rose en masse and joined the
invaders. The Bolsheviks, surrounded on all sides and their
position rendered untenable, fled along the railway north-
wards towards Balta. At six a.m., Aug. 24, the British Fleet
anchored in the harbour and found that everything in the
city was in good order and that nothing in the nature of a riot
or a pogrom had taken place. The whole of the Black Sea coast
has now fallen into the hands of anti-Bolshevik forces, with
the result that Soviet Russia has now no foothold at all on any
coast which permits communication with the outside world.

KIEFF CUT OFF

In the Dnieper valley, Denikin’s troops are advancing with great
rapidity and are now within 30 miles of Kieff, at Tripole, on the
southern bank of the river; while to the south-west they are within
some 12 miles of Petlura’s troops. Further north, fighting is taking
place in the neighbourhood of Borispol. If the junction of the two
forces takes place the probability will be that the whole of the Bol-
shevik forces in the enormous pocket south of Kieff will no longer
have to be taken into consideration as an effective organised fight-
ing force. To the north-east, Denikin’s troops have made a further
advance in Konotop, and have captured the important railway
junction of Bakhmach, where five loaded trains fell into their
hands. This success finally cuts Kieff from any communication
with Central Soviet Russia. Evidence continues to come in of the
complete demoralisation of the Bolshevik forces in Ukraine.
Denikin’s cavalry and armoured trains are pushing forward
far in advance of his main bodies, mooting with no opposi-
tion, and encountering no organised Bolshevik troops or
defences, while the inhabitants, who care nothing for their
national independence, but only desire order and the
resumption of trade, welcome the arrival of their liberators.
On Denikin’s centre and right the Bolsheviks, who have been
massing heavy forces, probably taken from the eastern front,
have been counter-attacking vigorously and have gained
some success, capturing Volchansk, Valuiki, and
Buturlinovka. In the direction of Kursk, Denikin’s advance is
continuing successfully, but the strong Bolshevik counter-
attack down the railway from Tula to Mariupol has pene-
trated as far as Valinki, while further to the east Borisoglebsk
has been retaken by the Bolsheviks. Denikin has been driven
back a considerable distance south of Balaskov, Kamishin on
the Volga has been lost, and a slight retirement has also taken
place in the region of Elton Lake, north-east of Tsaritsin.

BIG CAVALRY SUCCESS

During the fighting by Liski-Novo Khopersk railway, General
Kamontoff, a Volunteer cavalry leader, worked northward
together with some of his troops and entered Tamboff, the chief
supply depot of the Red Southern Front, after having defeated the
Soviet troops at Makarova. 13,000 prisoners were captured by
them, and in addition 20,000 mobilised but untrained men were
disarmed and dispersed to their homes. One Red regiment,
together with 40 officers and a large number of machine-guns,
deserted to the Volunteer leader, who is now forming a Tula divi-
sion of three regiments from men who were lately in the Bolshevik
ranks. After distributing the Bolshevik food reserves amongst the
population and destroying what they could not take away, the Vol-
unteers evacuated Tamboff, and are now working north-west
towards Kosloff, the headquarters of the Bolshevik southern front.
This fine achievement on the part of Denikin’s cavalry must have
a very great moral effect upon the Bolsheviks in South Russia, as
also upon the local population, and will tend in all probability
greatly to nullify the effect of the Bolshevik advance south-west of
Voronesh.
It is clear that General Denikin’s main effort is now directed
westwards towards clearing the country between himself
and the Roumanians and Ukrainians, and expelling the Bol-
sheviks from the remainder of the frontier country of the
Ukraine; this great success he appears to be on the point of
attaining.
