RSPB to restore

wetland habitat

A wetland habitat which will protect
Scotland’s most threatened bird is to
be restored in Sutherland thanks to a
£34,000 grant.
The donation from the FCC
Communities Foundation will help
RSPB Scotland carry out work at its
Forsinard Flows Nature Reserve,
which houses the largest blanket bog
in Europe.
The reserve supports a wide array of
wildlife – including dunlin,
greenshank and hen harrier – and one
area, Forsinain Farm, provides a
mosaic of grasslands and wetlands that
is home to breeding curlew.
The UK’s breeding population of
curlew is more than 30 per cent of the
west European population.
RSPB Scotland has started work to
restore marshy conditions, reinstate
water controls, create shallow ponds,
and install fences for a controlled
livestock grazing regime.
