IN 1823, Scottish chemist
Charles Macintosh found
a way to bind two sheets
of cotton with rubber
to create the first
waterproof fabric.
Mackintosh (yes,
the spelling is differ-
ent!) is still made
by craftsmen near
Glasgow, combining
phenomenal fabric
technology with rich
tradition, and continues
to be one of the world’s
most influential coat
makers, with the brand
name now being used
generically for an entire
category of clothing.
At £795 for a classic
beige mac, it doesn’t come cheap,
but it is a lifetime investment. And
now, they come in exciting designs
such as leopard print!
KNOWN for its printed occasion
dresses, Beulah London also
makes elegant skirts, shirts
and scarves. Founded in 2011
by Lady Natasha Rufus Isaacs
and Lavinia Brennan, it has a
flagship boutique in London’s
Belgravia, and its elegant
designs are favoured by
the Duchess of
Cambridge.
The clothes
are designed
in the UK, with
many of the
materials pro-
duced in India
by fair wage
organisations.
The final man-
ufacturing is
largely carried
out in the UK.

founded in edinburgh in 2013. It was put on the
map in 2017 when meghan markle stepped out

Strathberry now
sells at upmarket
