CARDIFFCANTON Class 37sarepopular
modelling subjects, makingthe reissue
ofthe ‘OO’ gaugesplit-b ox Class37/0 in
‘Dutch’ livery as No. 37046agoodmove
by Bachmann (32-792).
Ordinary,non-celebrity locomotives
(such as No. 37046) which carriedno
nameplates or special embellishments,
areimportant modelsto pr oduce
because theyshouldmakeupthe bulk
of an ymodeller’s stableandoffer scope
forrenumbering with dueattention to
the detailapplied to it.
The prototype locomotiveled
afairlyuneventful lifeafter its
introduction to trafficinJ uly1962,
which includedashort stint in Scotland.
It is typical of manyClass 37s which
were not included in the heavy
generalrepairprogramme.Working
freight trafficand in frastructure
duties when based atCardiffCanton,
it attracted attention through its
various stints inFrance when operated
by EWS andwasregularlyrecorded
working infrastructuretrainsonthe
Paris-MarseilleTGVroute during its
construction.
Upo nreturn fromFrance ,the
locomotivewas placed in storein2 007
and eventuallyscrappedatBooths of
Rotherham in September 2009.
The model
The model isfinished in yellowand grey
infrastructurelivery known as ‘Dutch’,
as applied to manylocomotives in the
early1990s. It has split boxesand
ribbingoverthe boiler compartment
roof,common to Series1Class 37/0s,
and is modelled without squareframed
headlights,aretrospectivefittin gtoNo.
37046 which appears in photographs
of the locomotivearound mid-1992.
This setsatimeframe of around 1990
to 1992forthe model as allocated
to CardiffCanton forinfrastructure
duties (although it did perform on some
RegionalRailwaysservi cestoo).
The model is neatlyfinished in
pristine condition with
accu rate co lour sand comes
complete with etched stainless steel
double arrow emblems andCardiff
Canton depot plaquesfor£169.95.
Examination of photographs shows
that the model isaclose match to
the full sizelocomotiveinthat period,
althoughthe upperyellow band isatad
too deep. It isatypic al exampl eofthe
Bachmann Clas s37with its updated
six-axle drive, 21-pin DCCinter face
andworking running lights including
cablights.Upon testing, the model
performedwell and negotiated second
radius curves without difficult y.

The models arebased on the up-to-
date ‘N’gaugeMk.1 coach tooling with
separate flush glazing units and opaque
injection moulded plastic body shells.
Close coupling cams arefitted to the
coachframes alongsidevacuum brake
equipment and individual moulded truss
rodding. B1 bogies arefitted to both
coaches with correctlysized metal disc
wheels.Roof de tailincludesridgedome
ventilators, prominentroof ribbing and
wirewater tankfiller pipes.
BSK and SK
One coachisfinishedas No.34668,
aBrake SecondCorridor(BSK )coach
(374-197);whilst the accompanying
SecondCorridor (SK) coachrepresents
No. 18360 (374-066). Bothmodels
arefinished withaslightl yfaded tone
ofBRblue whichgoes well withthe
generallayerofframe dirtandgrime
appliedoverthe underframes,bogies,
the lowerbodysides andpartly on
theflush glazingtoo, indicatingthat
weatheringwas sprayedonafter
assembly wasmoreorless complete.
Roof colour is also suitablygrimy
with anevencoatofdarkroof dirt grey
instead of the blue/grey shade
applied toex-worksBRblueand
grey coache s. Both models are
consistentlyfinished, so match each
otherwell.Priced at £43.95 each,
theyare an interesting addition to the
Grah am Farish range.
