How did sneaker culture take over the world? Start with a joyful melding
of mobility and invention; add the distinctly American proposition

Shoe companies have made it their mission to move us forward—through
dizzying technological breakthroughs (some Nike sneakers utilize
Bluetooth signaling) and efforts to reduce their ecological impact (Tread
by Everlane, for example, are largely composed of recycled and natural
