Look out for bargains at nurseries. Smyth likes to buy “all the dead-looking perennials for a quid. They can
be easily brought back to life”.


Any gaps in the border are filled with trailing pelargoniums in pots, replaced in winter with cyclamen.


In spring, Smyth sows sweet peas and cosmos in his mini greenhouse and transplants them to “brighten up
any spot that looks sad”.
