of the suit, rather than being the same shade
as the bridesmaid dresses. This year contrast
waistcoats, too, tending to be plainer than in
past years with grooms opting for whites and
ivories; however, neckwear colours are still being
heavily infl uenced by the bridesmaid dresses
with purples, blues and pinks in both bold and
pastel tones top choices.
“More fi tted styles are popular as well,”
says Keith. “It has got a lot to do with the new
sharper boy bands that are dressing up and
wearing suits.”
Narrower sleeves have also this year been a
popular option as some groomsmen attempt to
channel a 60s feel. However Keith adds: “More
fi tted looks aren’t as good for the older men in
the groom’s group. Wholesalers need to have a
different block for men above a 44 inch chest to
hide their belly and bum.”
In a move to cater for the growing demand
Cameron Ross has introduced three slim-fi t
suits this year in navy, grey and black.
Marketing manager Pamela Robertson says:
“The popularity of the short jacket has grown
over the past few years and by adding the slim-fi t
styles to our collection we can cater for younger,
fashion-conscious grooms who don’t want the
‘formal’ look of the tailcoat. The navy slim fi t is a
real winner for these customers.”
Despite the increasing popularity of more
casual lounge suits, it seems the traditional
tailcoat is as popular as ever and Keith says
85% of his customers still opt for tailcoats.
This number is declining very slightly as
males explore new options, but with grooms
keen to wear something different from the
everyday work suit, tails still reign supreme
and it will be a good few years yet before they
are knocked off their perch. BB
