CRITICS’ CHOICE
JUDGE RINDER is
the latest host to
take the reins of a
topical comedy
show, and it’s high
time there was a
new face fronting a late-night
chat show (apologies to
Graham Norton, Alan Carr and
Jonathan Ross). The barrister
and one-time Stricly
contestant (pictured) is
nothing if not smart and
straight-talking, and it’s
unlikely he’ll be pussyfooting
around the current state of
the world. Joining him in the
studio will be celebrity guests
— beginning with Jonathan
Ross and comedians Tom
Allen and Judi Love — for
what promises
to be a sharp
and informed
look at the week
gone by.
PICK OF THE DAY
TAKE THE BAIT
Mortimer & Whitehouse:
Gone Fishing, 8pm, BBC2
BOB and Paul (pictured) are in
Enniskillen this week, and they
have their sights set on the one
that got away. Will the mighty
pike once more elude them in
the waters of Lough Erne?
Rods packed away, they take in some Irish
hospitality as they discuss health and bad
habits, and have a glimpse into the future.
CAKE TALK
The Great British Bake Off:
An Extra Slice, 8pm, Ch4
AS BAKE OFF returns, so too does its sister
show, hosted by Jo Brand. For the first
episode, Jo welcomes Bake Off fans Frank
Skinner, Stephen Mangan and Scarlett
Moffatt to tell us what they think about this
year’s contestants and their debut bakes.
PLANT LIFE
Gardeners’ World, 8.30pm, BBC2
SUMMER hasn’t quite had its last gasp, but
it’s time to start thinking ahead and, at
Longmeadow, Monty offers
advice on how to prepare
your pumpkin crop for
a bumper harvest.
Frances Tophill and
Adam Frost hit the
road, visiting plots
in North London
and Gloucestershire that
are teeming with colour.
HIT SITCOM
Hold The Sunset,
9pm, BBC1
PHIL (John Cleese) is
(overly) optimistic
that the house sale will finally go
through, and he throws himself into
planning his wedding to Edith (Alison
Steadman). And, with love in the air
for another couple, everyone — even
Roger (Jason Watkins, pictured left
with Shauna Macdonald) — is feeling
buoyant. But how long can it last?
