THE GAME AWAY OVER BORIS PLOT

without a deal.” Ex-Chancellor Ken Clarke
added: “I would do anything necessary to stop
this country going through the childishly disas-
trous mistake of crashing out with no deal.”
Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd,
who once described as “ridiculous” the sugges-
tion of suspending Parliament to push through
a no-deal Brexit, refused to comment on it on
a visit to Belfast yesterday. She would only say:
“I’m going to continue to do my job.”

made to leave the EU, deal or no deal. There are
no precedents for the abuse of prorogation.”
Mr O’Neill said the Queen, who agreed to Mr
Johnson’s request after three ministers
descended on Balmoral, should have to recall
the order if it was based on an error of law.
But former Supreme Court judge Lord Sump-
tion told the BBC: “I don’t think what the Prime
Minister has said he is going to do is unlawful.”
In Ireland, Minister of State Michael D’Arcy
compared Mr Johnson to Oliver Cromwell and
said prorogation was “anti-democratic”.
Some Tories may rebel to torpedo a no-deal
Brexit. Ex-Justice Secretary David Gauke said:
“I don’t believe there is a mandate for leaving

prorogation, with demos planned across the
UK tomorrow and a mass rally in Westminster
on Tuesday. Mr Corbyn last night wrote to
Labour MPs urging them to join public protests.
More than 1.5 million people have signed a
petition against the prorogation, but Commons
leader Jacob Rees-Mogg said their outrage was
“phoney”. He said: “It is created by people who
don’t want us to leave the European Union.”
Around 70 MPs and peers took their fight to
the Court of Session in Edinburgh, asking
judges to temporarily stop the PM suspending
Parliament until a final ruling. Their QC Aidan
O’Neill said: “Prorogation is being used to
create something irreversible, that the UK be

CAMPAIGNERS and MPs are exploring ways to
block a no-deal Brexit. These include:
COURTS Various legal battles are under way to
declare prorogation unlawful. However, this is
complicated because the Queen gave the order.
It would have to be proved she acted on wrong
advice from her Prime Minister or Privy Counsellors.
In reality, judges are unlikely to get involved.
EMERGENCY DEBATE When MPs return from their
summer break on Tuesday, they will demand an
emergency debate under Standing Order 24.
Votes using this device are not binding but the
Speaker could let MPs seize control of parliamentary
business and allow Opposition parties to try to pass
their own laws. They could force the PM to ask for a
Brexit delay or demand a second referendum.
NO-CONFIDENCE AND CORBYN AS PM Jeremy
Corbyn could force a vote of no-confidence in the
Government, but he would need Tory rebel support.
While many are opposed to a
no-deal departure, they also
fear the consequences of
opening the door to Labour.
NO-CONFIDENCE AND
ELECTION MPs could oust the
Government by backing a vote
of no-confidence. That triggers
a 14-day deadline for an
alternative administration to
form a viable government. If time runs out, a general
election is called. But the date is in the PM’s hands.
REVIVING THERESA MAY’S DEAL The thrice-
doomed pact was overwhelmingly rejected – though
some MPs now privately regret not supporting it.
But the PM could still have some tricks up his
sleeve to force through no-deal, such as:
BOOST NUMBER OF BREXITEER PEERS Six
Leave-supporting peers could be parachuted into the
House of Lords to increase the Government’s chances
of forcing through a no-deal Brexit. But creating more
Barons and Baronesses will provoke uproar.
CREATE MORE BANK HOLIDAYS No 10 is also
reportedly creating more bank holidays to prevent
Parliament being recalled.
An amendment by Tory rebel Dominic Grieve could
force MPs to return to the Commons if the
Government tried to force through no-deal during
prorogation. But the measure specifies that in such a
case Parliament would not sit on bank holidays.

Popular Davidson

leads resignations

RUTH Davidson quit as leader of the Scottish
Conservatives yesterday in the wake of Boris
Johnson’s decision to shut down Parliament.
Ms Davidson, 40, who voted Remain, said the role
had been the “privilege of my life” but
the birth of baby son, Finn, last
year had forced a rethink.
The popular politician said
the prospect “of hours away
from my home and family
now fills me with dread”.
While “conflicted” on
Brexit, she said she had tried
to “chart a course which
respects the referendum
result” and would “stand full-square behind” the PM.
Tory whip Lord Young also quit, saying the
shutdown undermined Parliament’s “fundamental
role at a critical time in our history”. And former
Business Minister Richard Harrington revealed he
would stand down at the next election.

NIGEL Farage’s Brexit Party took more
than £1million in big-money donations
in its first three months.
Details of the assets came as Mr
Farage said his group could wipe out
the Tories in a general election.

Party accepted £1,039,000 from
