Some might say a Mazda-themed issue
of Super Street has been a long time
coming, and we completely agree.
Over the last two decades, we’ve featured
dozens (if not, hundreds!) of RX-7s, as well
as RX-3s, RX-8s, Miatas—basically anything
sporty produced by Mazda. All arrows were
pointing in the direction of putting together
a special edition, and when we put the issue
to bed, we knew we had to commemorate
the accomplishment in a big way. We
hatched a plan to hold a mini-meet and pizza
party in our El Segundo home base’s photo
studio, and we invited local Mazda owners
to join us along with a small group of
MotorTrend OnDemand subscribers. Mazda
helped out by delivering a pair of special
vehicles for display, one of them a four-rotor
767B IMSA GTP-class race car from the late
’80s, done up in iconic Renown green-and-
orange argyle (like the Le Mans–winning
787B), and the other being its “Halfie”
concept—a roadster that’s half factory ND
MX-5 and half Global MX-5 Cup racer.
When the big day arrived, things couldn’t
have gone more smoothly. Over endless
slices of Grimaldi’s pizza, meet-goers were
encouraged to take a closer look at display
cars that included Jonny Grunwald’s RX-
and RX-8, the Lucky 7 Racing FC, and the FC
belonging to Hert Eugene of Hoonigan. Those
who hung around for rollout were treated
to all the braps. We cannot thank everyone
enough who contributed to the Mazda issue,
as well as those who supported us by picking
up the magazine at their local newsstand.
Let’s do it again next year!
