Jeep Gladiator

The Wrangler-based Gladiator is a pickup truck with a 5-foot bed.
The 3.6-liter V6 mated to a smooth eight-speed automatic, which
together give the Gladiator some oomph. Unlike other pickup trucks,
it uses coil springs in the rear suspension, which makes the ride rela-
tively civilized. Handling, however, is rather mushy. The truck comes
with a soft top or an optional removable hardtop. Wind noise is pro-
nounced when driving on the highway. The Rubicon is the top-of-the-
line, off-road version. The tailgate is damped, so it lowers slowly, and
it can be stopped in three positions. Other options include a spray-in
bed liner, a bed divider, a 115-volt power outlet, and a cargo cover.
Several advanced safety and driver-assist features are available in
option packages, including forward collision warning, blind spot
warning, rear cross traffic warning, and adaptive cruise control.

Jeep Compass

The Compass, which slots above the Renegade and below the
Cherokee, is not competitive with its peers. Power comes from a 180-
hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that we found to be unrefined and
sluggish. Most versions have the nine-speed automatic, which is nei-
ther smooth nor responsive. Handling isn’t agile, although the Jeep
is secure when pushed. The ride is rather stiff and jittery. The rear
seat is too low and f lat. The optional 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment
system is easy to use. Available safety features include forward colli-
sion warning, lane departure warning, and blind spot warning. The
Trailhawk is designed to look more off-road-ready, but the Compass
is not intended for such demanding conditions. Overall, other than
the allure of the Jeep brand, the Compass trails the competition in
several important metrics.
