The new GLE is very quiet and impeccably finished inside and has
excellent seats. It has a standard 255-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-
cylinder engine and nine-speed automatic transmission. This combi-
nation returned 20 mpg overall in our tests. It rides comfortably but
handling is not sporty. A small third row is available. The GLE gets
Mercedes’ next-generation infotainment system, consisting of one
large screen that blends the instrument panel blend into the center
screen. Audio, phone, navigation and some comfort settings are
done through the touchscreen, touchpad, or steering wheel controls.
We found the extremely distracting to use, even with the capability
to use voice commands with natural language. The uplevel GLE450
has a stronger 3.0-liter turbo six cylinder engine that’s powerful.Overall Score 66

Worse than average 2Mercedes-Benz GLC
Based on the C-Class, the GLC is one of the best driving compact-
luxury SUVs on the market. Plush furnishings inside the quiet cabin
prove to be appealing, although it also has Mercedes’ complex
infotainment system. The front seats are very comfortable and sup-
portive, but the rear is a bit snug. The 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder
delivers ample power and is matched to a nine-speed automatic that
works well. The GLC rides comfortably and handles with athleticism.
Automatic emergency braking is standard. A turbo V6 AMG GLC43
and a turbo V8 AMG GLC63 versions are available. There is also a
sleeker SUV, the GLC Coupe. A freshened GLC, with an updated
engine and the new MBUX infotainment system, will go on sale later
this year.
