Mercedes-Benz S-Class

The S-Class is brimming with features and qualities that make
it stand out among luxury cars. The powerful turbo V8 that we
tested provided effortless acceleration and delivered 18 mpg over-
all in our tests. The plush, magic carpet ride is the best we’ve ever
tested, and the cabin is ultra quiet. Even though the S-Class is large,
handling agility is commendable, with quick steering. Along with the
seats and steering wheel, the door and center armrests are heated as
well. Many controls are overly complicated, however. The S-Class has
partial automation, which gives the car the ability to follow the road
and maintain a set distance from cars ahead including the ability to
stop and resume driving in stop and go situations. Coupe and con-
vertible versions are available.

Mercedes-Benz GLS

The redesigned GLS is longer than its predecessor, with more interior
space. It packs in more technical features, such as the latest infotain-
ment system, which consists of a touch screen as well as touchpad and
voice control for many functions. Both the standard 3.0-liter six-cylin-
der and uplevel 4.0-liter V8 have a 48-volt mild-hybrid setup to smooth
out the gas-saving stop/start feature and help accessories at idle. A
nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard.
Every GLS comes with an air suspension that’s designed to limit body
motions and make the ride steady on every type of road. The interior
can be configured for either six or seven passengers with the latter
having a bench as opposed to two captain’s chairs in the middle row.
Standard safety features include automatic emergency braking and
blind spot warning.
